Playacar is a gated community comprised of two phases within the charming city of Playa del Carmen. Playacar phase 1 was first established in 1979 along the region’s pristine, undisturbed coastline.  At that time, Fernando Barbachano, development company owner, often hosted beach barbecues inviting his own employees as well as potential investors, including George Bush.

These outdoor gatherings prompted a surge in visitors to the region as word spread about this virtually untouched paradise in the Mayan Riviera. Phase 1 became the first high end residential community in Playa del Carmen. Eventually two condo-hotels were constructed facing the breathtaking Caribbean Sea.

A few years later, the second phase in Playacar was developed around a championship golf course, now The Hard Rock Golf Club Riviera Maya. Today, the largest all-inclusive hotels in the city speckle the white sand beaches of Phase 2 and the budding residential area has sprouted several businesses, including two schools.

One of the many advantages of living in this endless summer climate is that the weather, for over three hundred days a year, is favorable for outdoor living. Walking or cycling the scenic, six kilometer trail which encircles Playacar phase 2, is an excellent way to begin the day. The nearby mesmerizing, turquoise waters, the glorious Mexican sunshine and the palm-fringed sidewalk offer many opportune moments to connect with nature and attain a tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle of a busy schedule.

The scenic 6km Playacar Phase 2 path

Following the paved path painted fuchsia and red with bougainvilleas and hibiscus blooms, trekkers will come upon town home developments, striking, luxury villas, and some of Playa del Carmen’s most exquisite condo-resorts. Also lining the walkway is a bird sanctuary, home to flamingos, toucans, parrots, and over 60 other feathered species, two ancient ruin sites, spas and an outdoor shopping center. Plaza Playacar offers guests and residents convenient access to tour and rental car companies, money exchange services, and artisan shops.  From time to time, cultural performances and other family friendly events are held in the plaza’s main square.

Another aspect of Playa del Carmen which makes it an ideal permanent or vacation destination, is the minimal traffic. Although the effervescent urban center is only a five minute drive from Playacar, the quaint community offers almost every convenience within walking distance.  At the furthest point within the exclusive phase 2, guests can access the famed 5th Avenue by foot in thirty to forty minutes.

Inside this suburban heaven is a dozen restaurants featuring authentic Mexican cuisine and standard North American menus, two pizzerias, a French bakery, an organic restaurant,  spas, a Gelato shop, two pubs, two Oxxo convenience stores and yes, even a Starbucks for those who cannot live without.

With a resident card, guests and Playacar occupants can access the glistening sea via the Reef Hotel which offers complimentary beach and poolside lounge chairs with umbrellas. There is also one other access point in the area which passes by an archeological site and leads to the world-class beaches of Playacar Phase 1.

Four secured stations offer admittance into the desirable residential community with many services just beyond the gates. For those seeking a serene environment bursting with natural splendor, where golf carts are a common mode of transportation and local wildlife roams free, Playacar is a tropical haven like no other in the Mayan Riviera.

Dac

I remember the good ol’ days, when we first arrived in Playa del Carmen. On a cultural mission to test out the waters, (literally: those glistening, turquoise waters… ahhhhh) our family wished to understand and partake in Mexican traditions, to live the beach life for a year or so, and to learn Spanish. I imagined that by immersing myself into the community, I would be completely fluent in a couple of months. Four glorious years have come and gone. Yet, there are still times when my brain feels as though it’s being squeezed in a vice when attempting to converse or remember the Spanish word for kale.

Grocery shopping in those initial months was particularly excruciating! I bought the necessities and prayed that the cashier would say nothing more than ‘Buenos Dias’. The greeting I could handle, but beyond that, he could have spoken Martian and I would have understood as much. Embarrassingly for me, more questions similar to “Tiene usted una tarjeta de puntos?’ (Do you have a points/rewards card?) or ‘Le gustaría donar?’ (Would you like to make a donation?) would leave me with a blank stare and flushed cheeks.

Eventually, after spending a few consecutive months or years here, expats such as myself, are able to commune with the locals just fine, albeit in a rough Spanglish dialect. However, for visitors who are new to the area and to the language, a simple trip to a Mexican supermarket can result in utter frustration. For this reason, we have compiled some helpful suggestions and tools intended to alleviate some of the stress that may occur when navigating through a grocery store in Playa del Carmen.

Where To Find Food Products In Playa del Carmen

The gorgeous variety of vibrant, exotic fruit is as abundant as the ‘fruterias’ (produce markets) in Playa del Carmen. These corner stores often have fresh cut, multi-colored fruit salads for your convenience or delicious blends of freshly squeezed concoctions, such as carrot and orange, beet or vitamin-packed green juices.

Dac on 30 Avenue, between Constituyentes and Calle 20 offers quality fruits, vegetables and an assortment of international grocery products. If you are willing to venture out of the way somewhat, Pasca Deli on Constituyentes between 70 and 75 Avenue in the Ejidal is an excellent source of hard to find international items, baking supplies and quality food products.

Mega
Mega – Comercial Mexicana

For more selection, there are several superstores around the city including Walmart, (30 Avenue and Calle 10) Comercial Mexicana (also known as Mega), (30 Avenue and Constituyentes), Chedraui (45 Avenue and Calle 2 Sur) and Soriana (in the Centro Maya Mall on the South end of town or on 30 Avenue, between Calle 38 and 40). Sam’s Club and City Club, also on the South end of town along the Carretera Federal, provide a wide variety of bulk goods, but a membership card (usually $300 – $400 pesos annually) is required.

An Introduction To Mexican Products Worth Trying

Visiting a foreign country presents a terrific opportunity to introduce your taste buds to new flavors. Although supermarkets around the world are beginning to supply consumers with more choices in exotic and imported goods, there are many mysterious Mexican products worth getting acquainted with.

  • Nopal

    Nopal

This thick, flat, oval shaped pad from a cactus plant is packed with fiber, anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. Consuming nopales has shown to boost immune systems, optimize metabolic functions, regulate the digestive system and protect the skin from certain cancers. These firm, green paddles can be diced and added raw to salads or juiced, fried or roasted and added to tacos, scrambled eggs and stews.

  • Chayote

    Chayote

The Chayote is from the gourd family and provides an adequate source of vitamins including C, riboflavin and thiamin as well as minerals such as iron, copper, zinc and manganese. Incorporating this low calorie, high fiber veggie can help to control cholesterol and aid in weight management. Julienne this pear-shaped vine vegetable and add it raw to salads and slaws or dice it in stir-fries, soups or casseroles.

  • Tomatillos

These green tomatoes are roughly the size of apricots and are packed with vitamins and minerals known to reduce the risk of diabetes, increase digestive health, boost the immune system, improve vision health and increase energy levels. The sweeter, citrusy flavor goes well with slow cooked pork and is a staple in tangy, green Mexican salsas.

  • Jamaica

These dried red leaves from the hibiscus flower are found packaged in clear plastic bags or in bulk bins near the dried chile section of the market. Consuming agua de Jamaica or hibiscus tea has been proven to regulate blood pressure, as well as increase HDL or good cholesterol, which in turn lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • Chaya

Known as the Mayan green super food, Chaya has incredible health benefits including aiding with diabetes, acne, digestion, obesity and kidney stones. Studies have shown that chaya contains more protein and calcium than kale, while possessing twice the amount of iron and fiber than spinach. This nutrient-rich leafy vegetable can help to improve memory, vision and also prevent coughs. Simply chop it and add it to scrambled eggs or blend with whole limes, a natural sweetener and water for a refreshing beverage.

  • Piloncillo

This natural sweetener is derived from the sugar cane and is an unrefined sugar. Since it has not undergone a heavy processing stage, vitamins such as calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and potassium remain intact. This unprocessed, raw sugar can be shaved and substituted for brown sugar in baking or used as a sweetener in coffee and tea.

Farm Markets, Organic and Vegan Products

Every week, vendors gather to sell local, organic and homemade goods at farmers markets around Playa del Carmen. Organic produce, fresh, homemade baked breads, empanadas, French tarts and pastries, jams, nut butters, bar soaps, lotions, and honey are just some of the products offered at these popular community markets.

On Tuesdays from 11a.m. – 1p.m, Kava Kasa (Calle 22 between 5th and 10th Avenue) hosts the first weekly market. El Papalote (25th Avenue between Calle 30 and 32) is the chosen location on Wednesday afternoons from 1-3p.m. Fridays, the market moves to Coco Beach (pool area of Condo Les Alizes on CTM and Flamingos) from 9-11a.m. Finally, every third Saturday of the month, Parque La Ceiba (Calle 1 Sur and 60th Avenue) opens its door and invites vendors to present their wares from 12-6p.m.

For organic and health food stores, Bio-Natural (10th Avenue between Calle 16 and Constituyentes), Bio Organicos (Calle 26 between 5th and 10th Avenue), Dac (30th Avenue between Constituyentes and Calle 20), Organik Boutique (Plaza Paseo Playacar in Playacar Fase 2) or Frutalesa in Paseo Tulum in Playacar Fase 2 across from the Centro Maya Mall offer the best selection in town.

Ideal Edenic offers delivery service of organic produce to Playa del Carmen. Each week they post a list of available products on their Facebook page and website. For more info or to place an order, call (998) 225-2342.

Grocery Shopping Tips

  • The supermarkets here offer a high US dollar exchange rate, so save your dollars for groceries!
  • The bigger chain stores are open from 7:00a.m. – 11:00p.m. Dac and the smaller markets close earlier.
  • Taxis are readily available outside every main supermarket.
  • It is customary to tip the people who bag your items. A rule of thumb to follow is $1 peso per bag.
  • The sale of alcohol products is prohibited after certain hours but the time varies from store to store. Typically between 9a.m. and 5p.m, you can buy alcohol anywhere, except for on Sundays, many places stop selling alcohol at 2:00p.m.
  • Wednesdays are commonly a much busier day than usual in Playa del Carmen supermarkets due to the specials on produce. If you are not keen to waiting in long lines, you will save yourself some time by choosing to shop on an alternative day.
  • For fresh herbs such as dill (eneldo) or basil (albahaca), ask the clerks at Dac to retrieve some for you. They almost always carry herbs but they are kept in the cooler in the back of the store.
  • If you find an imported product that is not easy to find in Playa del Carmen, stock up! Chances are, you will not see the rare item again for months, if ever!

Alux restaurant in Playa del Carmen

There’s a reason why most bios on online dating platforms list walks on the beach as a favorite pastime, because it’s an activity that screams ROMANCE! The good news is that Playa del Carmen sits on one of the most alluring powdery-soft coastlines on the planet. The great news is that beginning your days by watching breathtaking sunrises together tends to lead to magical nights with happy endings!

One of the main components in the Mexican culture is being hospitable. If you’re a guest in someone’s home, consider yourself lucky to be in the presence of the quintessential host. This desire to make you feel welcome is an innate attribute that has trickled down into the region’s thriving tourism business.

One of our favorite activities for couples is a photography workshop with Bushman Photography. The company provides professional cameras and lenses and participants are instructed throughout the day. Whether you and your partner are avid divers or beginners, spending a day beneath the surface of the Caribbean Sea is an unforgettable experience. There are shipwrecks to discover and an abundance of marine creatures to mingle with.

If you love the water but diving is not necessarily your thing, swimming with the whale sharks is an unbelievable encounter. These gentle giants migrate to two areas in the Yucatan Peninsula through the months of June to September. You can snorkel side by side with the largest creatures of the sea in Isla Mujeres or in Holbox. Either option is an easy day trip from Playa del Carmen and the experience will most definitely be one of the high points of your honeymoon.

It’s A Small City With Fantastic Night Life

Playa del Carmen nightlife

After soaking up the sun or touring the awesome terrain, we suggest you get out and see what Playa del Carmen has in store at night. Coco Bongo is famous for its Vegas-style shows, world-class DJs and epic party atmosphere. You can get an all-inclusive bracelet from vendors stationed along 5th Avenue, Playa’s main dining, shopping and entertainment district. Enjoy superstar music impersonations, silk aerial acrobatic performances and an outstanding staff that really keeps the party alive all night long.

If you’re over the nightclub scene, we recommend Le Lotus Rouge for a unique experience. Also known as Art World, it is a place for every type of artist to let their creativity soar. A Reggae, Jazz or Rock performer will take the intimate stage one night, while open mic and poetry readings happen on other nights. When you walk into this place, it’s as if you’ve set foot on another planet, an artistic carnival spectacle. But have no fear, Natacsha, the one-of-a-kind mastermind behind this intriguing creation, has a knack for making people feel open and comfortable. Her personable way loosens your inhibitions and encourages your imagination to take you on a journey you’ll remember forever.

For those of you that are looking for a dance scene sans techno music, you’ll love the live bands at Zenzi Beach Bar. Sip on minty mojitos ocean side with your toes in the sand and listen to some of the best live music in town. Zenzi is also the place to be for those who enjoy sultry salsa nights.

It’s An Award-Winning Travel Destination

Recently earning 20th spot on Trip Advisor’s Traveller’s Choice for Top 25 Destinations in the World, Playa del Carmen offers sublime beaches, a vast selection of superb accommodations to suit any budget, an ultra-hip, multicultural vibe, and a flourishing dining scene to name a few.

The Riviera Maya also won Best Honeymoon Destination: Mexico & South America at the 2017 Travvy Awards held in New York City. Tourism is the main industry in this part of the country, so government officials, industry employees and The Riviera Maya Tourism Board work hard to ensure visitors have safe, unforgettable experiences.

Here’s to love, laughter and happily ever after!

A guide to swimming with whale sharks on Holbox Island, Mexico

Updated Mar 18, 2024

Waking Up In Paradise

I awoke early and tiptoed out to catch a glimpse of the sunrise in all its pink and orange grandeur. Looking out to the sea, I sighed deeply feeling grateful for the front row seat to the spectacular event. After living in nearby Playa del Carmen for four years, I wondered why I had waited so long to visit this picturesque island. Although I had only been in Holbox for a few short hours, I was already completely captivated.

A Wild Adventure At Sea

August on Holbox Island means whale shark season, hence the reason for our trip. It was almost time for the highly anticipated tour. We looked forward to boarding the boat that would take us to swim with the majestic, spotted sharks. By late morning, we had gathered the group together to walk to the nearby dock. There, we were greeted by a stalky, Mexican man with blue eyes and a gold tooth. Capitan Cholenco invited us onto his boat and introduced us to his assistant, Misael.

Cholenco's Tours, Holbox Island, Mexico

We settled in, strapped our life jackets on, and listened to Misael run through the safety instructions and precautions. As we listened, the captain’s assistant made no mention of any dangers of swimming alongside these sea giants. Despite growing to an average size of 7 meters long, whale sharks are serene and gentle fish. In order to sustain their energy levels, they need to consume about thirty to forty pounds of plankton daily. Therefore, Misael advised that we refrain from using sunscreen, a water pollutant that ultimately kills their food source.

Along the hour and a half journey towards the whale shark area, Captain Cholenco spotted a sea turtle. His knack for noticing a change in the appearance on the water’s surface a hundred yards out was astounding. He slowed down and circled back so that we could view the mid-sized turtle. It bobbed at the surface then vanished into the underwater abyss. While spotting the sea turtle in its natural habitat was thrilling, we would soon discover far more waiting in store for us!

Wildlife on Holbox Island, Mexico

This bird caught a ride with us for the last 1/2 hour of our trip.

Soon after, we arrived at the feeding area of the school bus-sized fish. Within minutes we were geared with flippers, masks and snorkels, ready to join the grey and white whale sharks. Two by two, we jumped nervously into the water. With our heads submerged, we swam alongside these marvelous giants. We witnessed feeder fish tagging along on the beast’s belly, eager for leftovers that spilled out of the sides of its enormous, gaping mouth. After sharing a few rounds of priceless underwater encounters with the whale sharks, we were called back to the boat. Without a doubt, it was a bucket list moment. We were all reluctant to climb aboard, hoping the magic of the breathtaking experience would last a little longer.

Whale Shark

Of course trying to keep up to the whale sharks required a lot of energy and we were ravenous. The Captain had a surprise up his sleeve that would satisfy our hunger. Pulling up to a small fishing boat containing three good-natured fishermen, Cholenco purchased a few red snapper. The fish-market in the middle of the sea was a very surreal experience in itself. Still, there were many more enchanting scenarios ahead. Fifteen minutes later, we came upon a rustic beach. As we floated towards the white sand, the vast views of transparent, aqua-blue water rendered us speechless.

Across the crystal clear water, various bird species were perched on a sandbar. Catfish darted up to the boat to great us as we leapt into the refreshing, shallow water.  At this awe-inspiring inlet, we enjoyed three hours of bliss without another boat in sight. The kids snorkeled and tried to catch fish with their bare hands. We sat in the glistening water, sipping ice-cold beverages while Misael and the captain prepared a batch of fresh ceviche. Indeed, Cholenco’s secret, patented sauce made it the best ceviche we have ever tasted.

More Surprises To Come!

As the sun headed west and began its descent, we realized that our grand adventure would soon end. But, just when we thought we had seen it all, we came upon a pod of five dolphins. Giddy and wide-eyed, we observed the graceful creatures explode through the surface in perfect synchronization. We seemed to share an equal curiosity because they circled the boat twice before swimming off in haste.

Dolphins in the wild

It had been a scorching, hot day. Cholenco patiently obliged our periodic requests for pit stops and a chance to cool off in the turquoise waters. At the final leg of our journey, just a few minutes from the marina, we saw hundreds of poised pink flamingos. The tour operators explained that the rosy-colored birds obtain their bright pigment from eating mainly shrimp. The captain killed the engine so as not to startle the flamingos. He fascinated us with more facts. For example, due to the fragility of their long, thin legs, the birds need a proper take off to fly. Without a gradual ascension their legs can break, usually resulting in death not long after.

Pink Flamingos

The flamingos come to the island usually from April to October

Coasting into the dock, we thanked Misael and the captain for a thrilling day at sea. Settling into our beach hammocks at our hotel, we recalled the many highlights of our memorable trip. Later, after cleaning ourselves up, we ventured onto the main street of the small town. Vibrant murals covered entire buildings, golf carts motored across the gravel roads, and seafood aromas filled the air.

El Chapulim enticed us with its promise of fresh catch of the day offerings. There was no menu, however the chef recommended four choices of main entree. One selection included a filet of succulent white fish with a poblano sauce. As well, we savored a prawn dish sautéed with zucchini, mushrooms and chiles in a garlic butter sauce. To drink, we ordered the house mango and rum cocktails. The delectable meal was an ideal end to our final evening on the heavenly island of Holbox.

Important Tips For Your Holbox Trip:

The whale shark season typically runs from June 1 to September 15 each year. Likewise is the season for bioluminescence (the glowing plankton.) During the off season, there are also year round fishing, diving, snorkeling and sunset cruise tours offered for fun and adventure.

Getting to Holbox from Playa del Carmen

There is a toll highway from Playa del Carmen (cost around $300 Mxn Pesos CASH depending on size of vehicle). The travel time to Chiquila Port is approximately 1.5 hours.

The ADO bus system is very efficient, presenting comfortable, air-conditioned rides. The cost from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila Port is around $276 MXN and takes about 2.5 hours.

In Chiquila, there is an abundance of overnight parking options. 2 ferry companies, 9 Hermanos and Holbox Express, can take you on the 25 minute ride to Holbox Island. Prices are $220 Mxn Pesos/adult and $180 Mxn Pesos/Child. The first crossing to Holbox Island is at 5 a.m. and the final is at 9:00 p.m.

What to pack for your tour

Included with Cholenco’s Tours is a selection of non-alcoholic beverages, sandwiches, a piece of fruit and the freshly prepared ceviche. Also, snorkel equipment and life jackets are provided. It is recommended that you bring towels and something to counter nausea such as non-drowsy Gravol or Dramamine.

Bring cash. On the dock, you may be to pay a small entrance fee ($50 MXN) to the Yum-Balam Biosphere Reserve. This was a separate cost not included in the whale shark tour.

Pack hats, biodegradable sunscreen sunglasses and long-sleeved swim shirts for the children. Our boat offered some shade.

Do pack non-toxic repellent with you to lather on at dusk when the mosquitos come out.

Where to stay and eat

We stayed at the Amaite Hotel and Spa, which was approximately a 20 minute walk from the ferry dock. Conveniently, there are golf cart taxis that will take you to your destination. The Amaite Hotel and Spa is ideally situated in the town center, offering sea views and spacious family rooms which accommodate up to 6 people. A continental breakfast was included with our stay, but a restaurant and bar provides a full dining menu and beverage service. On-site massages can be booked with advanced notice and yoga classes are given twice weekly. In addition, this ocean-front hotel is less than 100 meters away from the tour boat dock.

For excellent fish tacos, a reasonably priced cocktail menu and exceptional live music, we suggest Viva Zapata.

There are so many sensational beach clubs along the powdery-white shoreline of the Riviera Maya, that it was difficult to fit them all into a Top 10 list. So we whittled it down to 12 of our absolute favorites.

We’ve included a wide range of options for every sun-loving genre of traveler. From family-friendly, to relaxed Caribbean vibe to trendy, it-crowd beach clubs, you are bound to find your beach bliss along this sublime stretch of coastal paradise!

During the day, patrons can take in the exceptional ocean views and dine on fresh menu items such as the tropical fruit ceviche or the shrimp tacos. There is a plunge pool for cooling off, cold beverages and music all day long!

6. Thompson Beach House

Thompson Beach House

This is Playa del Carmen’s newest beach club located on Calle 8. The sophisticated atmosphere is ideal for sampling signature cocktails, mezcals and craft beers. Dine poolside or in the oceanfront lounge for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Cabanas, day beds and sofas on the sand, complete with food and beverage service, offer a luxurious beach experience. Top DJs and a horizon of glistening shades of blues and greens create the ultimate beach vibe.

7. Wah Wah Beach Bar

This beach bar on the sand at Calle 2 is a beloved hangout for locals and expats in Playa del Carmen. The personable management team is always smiling and they offer the most reasonable drink specials in town, as well as free lounge chairs on the beach!

Live bands play all week long belting out classic rock renditions and lighter beats leaving you with a feel-good attitude as you sink your toes into the sand with a cold Corona!

Wah Wah serves great brick-oven pizzas and an extensive menu of pub-style treats. There is a Sunday pig-roast buffet and you can count on watching major sporting events on the biggest projector screen in the city.

8. Blue Venado

Blue Venado

Located just 5 minutes South of Playa del Carmen, this rustic meets modern beach club offers a prime location to take in the views of the turquoise Caribbean Sea! On the heavenly premises is a restaurant, a bar area, and plenty of shaded lounge areas for guests’ utmost comfort.

The Mediterranean menu features an array of light beach eats like salads, ceviches and tuna or salmon tartars, to entrees like fresh catches of the day and pastas. Sit on the swings at the easy breezy bar area and have a cool, exotic cocktail or lay in the lounge beds with some music or a good book.

Within this lush eco-park, visitors can enjoy a horseback ride along the beach, snorkel in the translucent waters, swim in cenotes and take a tour through the jungle to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife.

9. KSM

This beach club sits on the pristine Xpu Ha beach, approximately 20 minutes South of Playa del Carmen. The casual tables in the sand and pleasant staff offer a welcoming atmosphere.

Xpu Ha is not widely known and still retains a rustic, secluded feel. The beach is wide and the blue-green waters stay shallow for hundreds of meters. Kite surfers will enjoy taking advantage of the sea breezes and gliding over the Caribbean on their boards.

Thursdays, inflatables are set up on the sand for the kiddos. As for the adults, well they can have their fun too at the bar sipping on KSM’s refreshing cucumber vodka creations. After a day of frolicking in the sand and surf, the whole family can dine on the mouthwatering shrimp tacos or a fresh filet of fish with oven roasted potatoes. Leave the stresses behind and live the dream at KSM!

10. La Buena Vida

This delightful beach club is towards the North end of Akumal, 25 minutes South of Playa del Carmen. Stretch out in a beanbag chair under the towering palms, sip on a cool Caribbean cocktail or dig into some tasty fish tacos from the casual menu.

Although the views are just as captivating here as at any of the above mentioned beach clubs, the shore is a bit rockier, so you may want to bring water shoes. Beachcombers will love the variety of dried coral remnants that have been washed ashore and the hundreds of smooth, colorful ocean stones that decorate the sand. Bring your gear along for a day of underwater exploration; the snorkeling is fantastic just off the shore.

A longtime favorite for locals in the Riviera Maya, La Buena Vida is open from 12 – 11pm daily. Whether you are coming to enjoy margaritas or a siesta in the hammocks during the day, or you prefer a romantic seaside dinner at night, this charming restaurant and beach bar will leave a lasting impression!

11. The Papaya Playa Project

Papaya Playa Project

This bohemian-chic beach club fits perfectly with the theme of Tulum, where it is located. Hanging lounge beds, restaurants, a gorgeous on-site pool, spectacular food and service make the Papaya Playa Project an appealing destination to spend the day or night.

At the rental shop, you can talk to instructors about kite-surfing lessons. Resident DJs set the laid-back ambience with a funky, easy listening playlist. Feel the powdery-soft sand between your toes as you bathe in the glorious sunshine or head to the crystalline waters to cool off.

Rain or shine, Papaya Playa Project presents ample space to socialize in a heavenly setting. If it’s a romantic meal for 2 that you seek, reserve the private table in the observatory, which offers an infinite turquoise view.

12. Ziggy’s Beach Bar and Restaurant

Located on the right side where the road forks in Tulum, Ziggy’s offers lounge beds and tables nestled under the palms that line the white-sand beach.

The exquisite menu, enrapturing views and sounds of the waves pounding the shore are a savory adventure for the senses. In the restaurant, dine on lighter fare such as Jamaica, Watermelon and Beet Salads or try the passion fruit grilled shrimp dish with baked sweet potatoes.

Each week, Ziggy’s presents a variety of theme nights. Sip cocktails by a bonfire on the beach, become familiar with Mexico’s beloved drink at Tequila Tasting session held on Tuesdays, or reserve a table for the Lobster and Seafood grill prepared in front of your eyes by the chef. Everyday is special at Ziggy’s!

Yucatan Peninsula Bucket List

Walking along 5th Avenue a few months back, I noticed a television screen showing images of thatched-roof huts on stilt beams, sitting above the type of clear blue water post cards are made of.

My first thought was why would they be advertising Fiji here in Playa del Carmen? I realized that surely this mesmerizing image must be of a place nearby, as it was showing on a screen of a local tour company. Intrigued, I had to find out about this mysterious paradise.

It turned out to be Bacalar, also known as The Lagoon of Seven Colors. I was immediately enamored with the idea of a road trip to see the mind-blowing beauty of this multi-colored lagoon for myself.

Although I have traveled to different parts of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula, each place leaving me with warm, fuzzy memories, I still have yet to make it to Bacalar! Living in the area, one always hears of this fantastic island or that magical town. My bucket list continues to grow with all of the regional gems that wait in the Yucatan Peninsula!

Here are ten points of interest I have my eyes and heart set on exploring in Yucatan Peninsula. Stay tuned, as I will be checking these fantastical sights off of my bucket lists and writing informative articles filled with travel tips!

The Colonial City of Merida

Merida Mexico

The largest city in the peninsula, culture and history merge at its nucleus to form the soul of Merida. The main town square (Plaza Grande) boasts remarkable colonial architecture dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

The residents possess a deep passion for the arts and the city works seamlessly with its inhabitants to preserve its colorful cultural heritage. Merida en Domingo is a program that has been around for more than 20 years. Participants gather around the Municipal buildings and historical center every Sunday, to view photo and painting exhibits, listen to music and concerts, watch folkloric dances and taste traditional Yucatecan food.

Another locale I’d like to check out in Merida is the General Cemetery just south of La Ermita. Free walking tours take visitors past brightly marked tombs and mausoleums, while introducing them to traditional burial methods.

One cannot call itself a true Mexican city without a Mercado. These marketplaces bustle with vendors selling typical foods, handicrafts, spices, and clothing to name a few. Merida’s grand Mercado is located in the city center (el Centro.)

Coba

Coba

The Yucatan Peninsula is veiled in a thick blanket of jungle. Amidst the thick brush, archaeologists have uncovered remnants of ancient Mayan pyramids, stadiums and monuments. I have been fortunate to visit many of the sacred sites including Tulum, Chichen Itza and Ek Balam, but Coba is definitely next on my travel agenda!

Located about an hour from Playa del Carmen, Coba is a series of temple structures and sacbeob or roadways. This is one of the last places in which tourists are allowed to climb the tallest pyramid on the peninsula, Nohuch Mul.

The grounds are extensive, so bicycle rentals are available. Another option visitors have is to hire a tricycle Pedi cab to taxi them around from one remarkable stone structure to another. I have heard the enrapturing views and sense of serenity one experiences atop Nohuch Mul is too incredible to describe in words.

El Cielo

This secluded beach is located on the island of Cozumel, just under an hour ferry ride from Playa del Carmen. Only accessible by boat, this undeveloped paradise offers the perfect snorkeling conditions due to its stunningly clear, blue waters.

Apparently, starfish still thrive in the shallow waters off the shoreline of El Cielo, meaning ‘Heaven.’ Tour boats hired from the harbor in Cozumel, take nature-lovers on a 4-5 hour ride and offer water, pop, light snacks and some of the best snorkeling adventures to be had this side of the Caribbean.

Xpa Maya

Xpa Maya

Nestled in an isolated corner off the main hub in Puerto Aventuras, (20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen) Xpa Maya is the epitome of a rustic spa experience. The location is so discreet it’s a secret even to some of the locals.

Massage tables are set up within breathtaking cenote settings. Local products such as honey, seasonal fruit and aromatic Mexican seeds are used in their body and skin treatments.

Outdoor showers made of bamboo and palapa huts cover the outdoor therapy rooms. Exclusive spa treatments like the Sacred Mayan Bath take place in the mineral-rich cenotes and make the pampering and rejuvenation experiences seem out of this world.

Botanical Garden

In between Playa del Carmen and the Cancun International Airport, is the small town of Puerto Morelos. It is in this delightful town that you’ll find El Jardin Botanico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin (the entrance is marked along the #307 Federal Highway.)

This botanical garden and conservation project offers guided educational tours Monday to Friday at 10:30a.m, but is open daily from 8 – 2pm daily. Explore 65 hectares of flora and fauna native to the region and prepare to receive a unique look at the monkeys who live, feed and nap in the trees above the walking paths!

Haciendas

Haciendas of the Yucatan

Haciendas of the Yucatan are sprawling ranches established under a Spanish system in the 16th century. Many of these palaces were deserted as the lands were confiscated in the revolution of 1910. Yet, some still stand in restored grandeur, speckling the land in the Yucatan Peninsula.

These historic plantations were used mainly for agriculture, but also had an important role as the heart of a community. The husband and wife had responsibilities as leaders, which included acting as judges and nursing the sick.

The opulent architecture and expansive gardens on these magnificent haciendas made a perfect, formal setting for hosting important festivities like weddings, baptisms and harvest festivals.

Some noteworthy haciendas that I’d like to have a sneak peak behind the colorful facades include Hacienda Temozon and Santa Rosa in the Yucatan, as well as Uayamon and Puerta Campeche in Campeche.

Punta Allen

Punta Allen

There is a long and bumpy road that leads to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere following the ocean south of Tulum. We’ve ventured to the rustic beaches in the biosphere reserve for some memorable beach days with friends and family.

However, we haven’t yet made the slow, (but I hear worthwhile) journey to the farthest tip of this road, which ends at Punta Allen. Due to its remote location, the charming fishing village has only a few modern amenities. The last I heard, there are no credit card machines, only cash is accepted and a cell signal comes and goes.

This is the alluring aspect of Punta Allen, you are forced to unplug and savor the breathtaking nature. There are tours offered that put visitors in touch with nature like few places can.

Take a boat out on the turquoise Caribbean to watch pods of dolphins swimming in their natural habitat. Wade through canals created and used by Mayans centuries ago. Indulge in fresh seafood caught the same day and put your feet up in a hammock as you gaze across the blue-green horizon.

Valladolid

Valladolid

Although I have visited Valladolid on three other occasions, there are still treasures waiting for me to discover in one of the safest, little colonial cities in Mexico.

The buildings and cathedrals are impressive with their rainbow color palettes and centuries old architecture. The center square bustles with action as street vendors sell trinkets and typical Yucatecan treats.

There is a beautiful fountain at the square’s mid point and 2 highly recommended visitor attractions looking over this main park – The Cathedral of San Gervasio (built in the 16th century which unfortunately was closed for lunch on one of our day trips) and La Meson del Marques (a stunning mansion converted into a hotel and one of the best places to have a meal at in Valladolid!)

The city is divided into 8 sections, with cenotes, tienditas (small artisan shops), parks, a convent and other historical monuments. It is small enough to walk through and visit many of the sights. One famous museum that I have yet to peruse is the Casa de los Venados with one of the largest exhibits of Mexican folk art in the country.

Just outside of Valladolid is Cenote Ik’kil, the most spectacular sunken, limestone swimming holes I have ever laid eyes on. A descending stairwell leads to a mostly enclosed cavern with crystal clear waters, trickling waterfalls, hanging vines and a cliff for jumping. It is a must when visiting the area.

Ek Balam, a sacred Mayan archaeological site, is also a short drive from Valladolid. Its name in Maya means ‘City of the Jaguar.’ The 40 or so buildings and amazing temples date back the height of the Mayan civilization (700- 1600AD) and boast marvelous carvings. The entrance fee is under $10USD and tour guides are available.

Underwater Museum

Beneath the turquoise waters just off the coast near Cancun, lies the MUSA underwater museum. 500 sculptures are submerged in depths of 3-8 meters. The museum was established in an effort to restore the health of local reef systems and increase the richness of marine life.

One such exhibit, The Dream Collector features a collection of bottles containing positive messages from people around the world. Another showcases men with briefcases hiding their heads in the sea floor as if to pretend to not understand the consequences of destroying the ocean for profit.

Each thought-provoking statue intends to evoke environmental awareness. As we venture out to explore the underwater world, it’s important to be conscious of the delicate ecosystems that exist within the reefs. We can be observers of their diverse beauty rather than be contributors to their destruction.

Important note: Remember to wear biodegradable sunscreen and to not touch the coral or any other marine organism when snorkeling or diving.

Bacalar

Bacalar

And last, but not least – Bacalar! This charming town was named a “Pueblo Magico’ in 2015 for its natural wonders. The lagoon itself is fed by three surrounding cenotes and changes various hues of greens and blues in the sunlight.

The waters are crystal clear and usually calm, which is invites swimmers and kayakers to get on the water and enjoy the surreal setting. There are a few rustic and boutique hotels in the city and along the lagoon’s edge, but the town remains small and not overly developed.

Within Bacalar stands a fortress built in 1725. The Fort of San Felipe has undergone many attacks over the centuries including those from real pirates of the Caribbean, to rebel forces attempting to siege the city during the Caste War in the late 1800s.

Today the fort still stands, cannons and all, as a museum containing historical artifacts, drawings, old weaponry, maps and a skeleton of an actual pirate!

There you have it – the top 10 choices on my Yucatan Peninsula bucket list! If you’ve had the pleasure of visiting any of the above mentioned places, please let me know what you loved about them or any others sights you’d recommend that I don’t know about. As I check them off my list in the upcoming months, I’ll be sure to write about the highlights and try to offer some valuable tips!

Water fountain in Valladolid

It had been three years since we had visited the congenial city of Valladolid, Yucatan.  So the kids and I were delighted to have the opportunity to join friends on a day trip to the charming, colonial city.  Located two hours from Playa Del Carmen, “Pueblo Magico” as it was named in 2012,  boasts stunning architecture dated back to the 1500’s. On route, we passed through Mayan pueblitas or small towns.   Artisans displayed beautifully crafted ceramic and hand-woven wares under thatched-roofed palapas alongside the road.  We made a quick pit stop at a honey farm and purchased some deliciously sweet honey and organic coconut body cream.

Arriving in Valladolid, it is easy to understand why this colorful city, known for its clean, safe environment and friendly people, is a popular point of interest for tourists and history buffs.  The Francisco Canton Rosario Square, situated in the heart of the city, is encircled by quaint shops, enchanting hotels and restaurants nestled behind impressive sixteenth century facades.

Old architecture of Vallodolid

Upon learning of some of the rich history of this Mexican city, we came to understand that it had not always garnered a reputation for peace.  For many years, the area had been afflicted with disharmony and political strife.  In fact, it was here where locals and Maya leaders formed a rebellion against a corrupt state government.  This revolt was believed to be the spark that set aflame the Mexican Revolution of 1910.

First on our city tour was “The Neighborhood Of Santa Ana”.  The park’s square was the site where the martyr Manuel Antonio Ay was hanged for conspiracy to start the Caste War in 1847.  In the center of the park is the “Rotunda of the Boy Heroes,” a rounded structure with 6 pillars.  The monument commemorates 6 young army cadets between the ages of 13 and 19, who bravely gave their lives defending the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City from a US army invasion.  Also on the square grounds stands one of Valladolid’s 7 cathedrals exhibiting exquisite sculptures and gorgeous stained-glass windows.

Convent of San Bernadino of Siena

Next to see was the “Convent of San Bernadino of Siena,” a monumental building constructed in the mid 1500’s over a natural cenote.  Inside, behind the altar of the church is a grand retable which ornately displays nine statues of saints including Mother Teresa and the Virgin of Guadalupe.  On our way to visit the back exterior of the grounds, we passed through the cloister surrounding the courtyard.  This customary, monastery architectural feature was where inhabitants of the convent would walk for hours with heads bowed, in silent prayer and meditation.

An on-site museum showcased artifacts, (mainly weapons and tools) retrieved from the cenote.  In the vast back garden, the kids collected oranges in the orchard, ran wild with the turkeys and peacocks, but were especially curious about the dome shaped vault built over the opening of the cenote.  They were fascinated to learn how the ancient water wheel of Sisal had once operated.

After spending the morning exploring, we had stirred our appetites.  For lunch, we dined in the “Meson del Marques,” a colonial mansion constructed in the 17th century and converted into a hotel and restaurant in the 1960’s.  In the center of the restaurant was a tranquil courtyard surrounded on the upper level by 6 of the original rooms of the mansion.  The menu offered many traditional Mexican dishes as well as local favorites.  I was enticed by the poblano chile stuffed with a ground beef, almond and raisin mixture and covered in a robust, red salsa.  The flowing fountains, lush courtyard and restaurant staff wearing traditional hand-woven hupils (or Mayan embroidered dresses) all contributed to the peaceful ambiance.

For dessert we decided to indulge in hand-churned ice cream from a local shop as we walked around the bustling main plaza, Parque Francisco Canton.  Unfortunately, the Cathedral of San Gervasio was closed for lunch, but that did not stop us from admiring its remarkable architectural details.

Cathedral of San Gervasio

Sadly, our field trip had come to end and it was time to make our way home.  Being such a small city, I was surprised by how many historical sites and rich cultural attributes there were to digest.  Had we stayed another day, perhaps I would have liked to swim in the awe-inspiring cenote Dzitnup, located just 7km from Valladolid.  Another nearby attraction I have yet to see is the archaeological site of Ek Balam about a 15 minute drive outside the city.

So much to see, so little time!  All in all, our spontaneous road trip to Valladolid was a fun-filled and memorable adventure.  Most importantly, the children and I were able to experience another aspect of the diverse Mexican culture outside our sometimes sheltered, albeit heavenly beach life in Playa del Carmen.
