Packing Tips For A Travel and First Aid Kit

Indeed, packing a travel and first aid kit for your Mexico vacation is a must. A waterproof pouch for your cell phone comes in handy when visiting nearby adventure parks like Xplor, Xel Ha, or Xcaret. Also, adding a pen in your passport carrier will make your life easier. If not, you’ll need to track one down in order to fill out the arrival forms either on the plane or once you enter the customs lineup. You Have Arrived!

Welcome to paradise! You’re one step closer to seaside palms swaying in the breeze and sipping cocktails with your toes in the sand. But first things first. 

Upon arrival, you’ll be required to fill out an immigration card. The lower portion will be stamped and returned to you. It is imperative that you keep this safe as it is your tourist card. You’ll need it to exit the country. However, should it be misplaced,  a copy can be requested at the immigration office at Cancun International Airport for a filing fee of about $40 USD. 

Money Matters

 

With regards to exchanging money, the most stress-free process is to order it before you come. In particular, if you have only Canadian dollars or Euros, your currency is a bit more complicated to exchange. You’ll want to have a few thousand pesos on hand for tips and day trips like cenotes. At the time of writing, $4000 MXN pesos is about $260 CDN. In order to keep with the hassle-free theme of the trip, request $50 and $20 peso bills for tipping and the remainder in $200s and $100s. This is a good amount to start with and you won’t have to worry about locating an ATM.

Most places do except USD, but the smaller family-owned businesses accept cash in the local currency. For a nice dinner out or to purchase a more pricey souvenir, credit cards are widely accepted. In any case, do not let the person handling your card take it out of your view. Fraud happens around the world, and Mexico is no exception.

Should your cash funds run low, you can always make a withdrawal at an ATM in town. Overall, refrain from using ATMs in hotels and all freestanding ones in the streets. Since these machines are usually compromised, it’s best to get money from an ATM within a bank. 

 

Tip: When making an ATM withdrawal, consider taking out one larger sum rather than several smaller sums over the course of your trip. This will save you a considerable amount on fees. 

 

If you’re American, you can exchange USD for pesos at Casas de Cambio (money exchange houses) at the many convenient downtown locations. Most banks in town now require you to have an account in order to exchange money. 

 

During Your Stay 

 

We get it, you’ve arrived to the land where tequila and good times flow. But after a day of flying, in combination with the Riviera Maya heat, dehydration can set in faster than heartburn after a batch of flaming hot wings. So keep sipping bottled water while the bartender mixes another round. Your future self will thank you. 

Concerning taxi service, try to hail a cab outside of the main taxi stands (where there is a grouping of taxis.) At these official sites, prices are posted and fixed according to the area’s zones. Since these sites typically cater to tourists, they are more expensive. Instead, hop in a taxi one block over to negotiate a local price. As a rule, you and the driver should agree to a price before you get in. 

In the case of grocery shopping, there are a few supermarket chains in the downtown area of Playa del Carmen. Within these superstores, you can find everything under one roof from alcohol to a bath mat. Mega Soriana is located on Constituyentes and 30th Avenue, while just down the road is Walmart on 30th and Calle 10. When staying in Playacar on the city’s south end, the Soriana in the Centro Maya Mall is your closest option.

For specialty items, Dac on 30th Avenue and Calle 20 is a popular market. Here, you can purchase gluten free items, a broad variety of fresh herbs and produce, as well as imported cheeses. When choosing a bottle of tequila, you can sample options at various shops running along the 5th Avenue strip. 2. Pollo Feliz

(Constituyentes and Avenida 100 Norte)

This family and budget-friendly restaurant is out of the tourist hub, but is worth exploring. This popular Mexican franchise is known for its rotisserie chicken served with fresh, homemade corn tortillas, grilled jalapeño salsa, and fluffy red rice. 

An order of horchata (sweetened rice milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon) or jamaica juice perfectly complements the meal. A family of five can leave with full bellies for approximately $25 USD— take that McDonalds! 

 

3. El Fogon

(Three downtown Playa del Carmen locations)

Tacos for a dollar? You don’t have to wait until Tuesday to sink your teeth into these delicious Mexican fare all-stars. The cooks designated to the revolving spit-grilled pork are geniuses when it comes to tacos al pastor. These tender bites of pork are a mouthful of goodness when served on warm tortillas with a slice of pineapple and spicy salsa. 

El Fogon has three downtown locations, on Calle 8, Constituyentes, as well as on 30th Avenue. Each eatery is busy, but typically has a quick turnover. After a day at the beach, or a night of dancing, you’ll find the tasty tacos are an ideal end to a memorable day in the Riviera Maya.

5. El Gran Taco

This is a must stop if you want to taste the true flavors of Mexico. The menu is vast and can be overwhelming for first-timers. More than a dozen ceramic pots of taco fillings are prepared fresh daily. Choose to stuff your warmed corn tacos with heaping piles of goodness such as pulled pork or chicken in a green salsa. Furthermore, the picadillo (a classic seasoned ground beef with potato mixture,) or rajas (roasted poblano peppers in a savory cream sauce) are top picks. 

In addition to tacos, this is the place to try gorditas exploding with robust mole, or flautas drizzled in crema and queso. Their yummy variation on the horchata rice milk drink comes with an added touch of coconut, which sells out quickly. 

 

6. Ferron’s Jerk Chicken

(Avenue 105 between Constituyentes and 30 Bis)

Ferron’s is a longtime local favorite for its famous jamaican jerk chicken and reasonable prices. In addition, the zesty jerk marinade can be enjoyed on their finger-licking good ribs. Their recipe for crispy fried chicken is hard to beat. Plus, after sampling the creamy mac and cheese, velvety mashed potatoes, and warm rolls bring, it’s easy to see why customers return time and time again. 

Having been around for a decade, the word is out on this gem on the other side of the highway. Without a doubt, it has earned its TripAdvisor Award of Excellence for the last five years running. Ferron’s is open from 12 p.m. to 6:00 p.m everyday except for Mondays. If you can’t make it across town, have it delivered. It makes for a perfect picnic on the beach! 

 

7. La Brocherie Rotisserie

(15th Avenue between Calle 4 and 6)

We love this French-style bistro for its chicken roasted with Herb de Provence. It’s a busy place in the evenings so you may have to wait, especially on the nights they serve their rich le Boeuf Bourguignon or mouthwatering mussels.

The owner frequently walks through the restaurant to engage with patrons, which adds a warm and welcoming touch. The charming French experience begins with appetizers in the form of pate and creamy cheese platters. The rave-worthy cuisine continues throughout the meal and is completed with a sumptuous assortment of desserts. The creme brulee and chocolate mousse will blow your mind, as will the amount of the check! It’s a superb Playa del Carmen dining experience for a fraction of what you’d expect to pay. 

 

8. Don Sirloin

(Three central locations)

 

Another hit on Playa del Carmen’s taqueria scene, Don Sirloin’s steak tacos are palate-pleasers. Also deserving a mention are the cheese fondues (Quesos Fundidos) and the arrachera tortas (grilled flank steak sandwiches.)

This is a perfect place to mingle with the local crowd and enjoy a cold $2.50 cerveza. The open-air eateries are conveniently located near the city center on 10th Avenue, Constituyentes and 30th Avenue. Don Sirloin’s vibrant atmosphere is an ideal for people-watching or catching an important soccer match.  

 

9. La Tarraya

(Calle 2 and the beach)

If you’re in search of a table with a view, La Tarraya is a fantastic option. Nibble on fish tacos  and breaded fish fillets (pescado empanizado) all the while absorbing the direct Caribbean vista. Toes in the powdery sand; tables under the coconut palms; there’s no better place for a budget-friendly meal and a margarita on the beach. 

Other favorites include Fajitas with a combination of fried peppers and tender chicken. The habanero salsa is one of the best in town, but be warned! It lights a fire going down, so a little goes a long way. 

 

10. Doña Mary

(Calle 28 & 30th Avenue)

Open at 3:30 in the afternoon, this is a very typical casual Mexican eatery with plastic tables and Coca Cola chairs. The ambiance is spirited, while the food is simple and authentic. Doña Mary’s presents a charming glimpse into the Mexican and Yucatecan culture.

Menu marvels include the empanadas— deep-fried, thin pockets filled with shredded pork, chicken, or cheese. Topped with sour cream, lettuce and the house salsa, the flavors are not the only thing to love. What’s really hard to believe is that these tasty little delights are less than a buck a piece!  Without a doubt, an agua natural, is the perfect accompaniment when it comes to a traditional Mexican meal. Xcaret Park

Following the scenic trail, you’ll come upon multiple pools of refreshing water fed by the underground river. Just before the main swimming area, a smaller wading pool sits amidst majestic Elephant Ear trees and fans of tropical palms. 

Further along is a more grandiose, clear water pool with a modest cliff for jumping, if you feel adventurous. While two hours is adequate for exploring this popular Riviera Maya cenote, this splendid Mexican escapade is a blissful one. Soaking within the turquoise waters of a natural, limestone pool, enveloped by jungle brush, and blanketed by a vast blue sky— it’s an encounter with nature that you won’t soon forget. 

A Beachfront Table At La Buena Vida

Perched along the panoramic Half Moon Bay in Akumal, just 25 minutes south of Playa del Carmen is La Buena Vida Beach Club. This is a local hangout not many visitors know about. Sure, we’d like to keep this magical place all to ourselves. But it would be selfish to deny travelers the chance to experience its enchanting vibe.

Complete with hammocks, an infinity pool, and a mezzanine with tables overlooking the bay, this prime piece of Caribbean real estate is the perfect spot for piña coladas and picturesque views. 

Alux Restaurant

Despite several visits to this remarkable restaurant and bar, Alux never ceases to amaze. Pockets within the caves set with tables and chandeliers make the ideal setting for romance in the Riviera Maya. Yet even if you’re solo, this dining experience is out of this world, 

Whether you reserve a table in the principal dining room or just stop by for drinks in the lounge, keep your camera handy. It’s not everyday that you can dine or sip tequila in an underground cavern. Strategically-placed spotlights showcase the remarkable cenotes, trickling waterfalls, and natural displays of mineral deposits. El Cielo

Named after heaven itself, El Cielo’s clear blue waters are an intoxicating sight. As you anchor in the bay, which is only accessible by boat, you will be blown away by the clarity and visibility as far as the eye can see. Poised in your tour vessel, you can observe manta rays and sea turtles gliding along the seafloor. 

The depth of the water ranges from waist deep to five feet at most points and is perfect for people of all ages. To have face to face encounters with these majestic marine species is like being part of a National Geographic documentary. The vibrant coral reefs and unmatched Caribbean vistas are impressive in every sense of the word. But the waters in this cove, comparable to any Maldives photo you’ve ever fantasized over, are epic.  

El Camaleon Golf Course at Mayakoba

If you’re a fan of golf, you may have watched some of the greats vie for the purse at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen. Although the PGA’s team does a superb job of highlighting the action, it’s impossible to capture the entire beauty of El Camaleon’s pristine land and seascapes.

During my family’s first year in Mexico, my mother and sister visited. The group was up for an adventure. He hopped on the running board, slung one hand around the mirror to hold on, and from the other hand, hung the rusted machete. As our crew recited prayers under our breath, we approached a clearing. It was the highway! Just as quickly as he had appeared, our guardian angel was off again. The kind stranger asked for nothing and simply waved before the jungle swallowed him once again.
