Pro Travel Tips For First-Time Visitors To Playa del Carmen

For those of you considering a trip to Playa del Carmen, but have not yet experienced its vibrant community, culture, or cuisine, these pro travel tips will help you to have the stress-free beach vacation you dreamed of.

Accommodations

The Elements Penthouse 22 by Bric Vacation Rentals, Playa del Carmen

Mexico is renowned for its luxurious all-inclusive resorts, especially those spanning the beaches of the Riviera Maya. While these properties offer convenience, with multiple pools, bars, and restaurants on-site, these mega hotels are typically isolated. During the booking process, you’ll want to consider how far the resort is from the airport, attractions, and the city. After all, you’ll want to maximize your time on the beach with a margarita and minimize travel time.

For this reason, staying in a central hotel or vacation rental within Playa del Carmen is an ideal vacation plan. With lodgings, beaches, restaurants, dive shops, cafes, and grocery stores bunched together near 5th Avenue (the city’s vibrant tourist hub), Playa is an appealing destination for its walkability factor.

Whenever a change of atmosphere is needed, hit the cobblestones outside your front door to discover a dazzling gastronomy scene, street performers, and bustling shops. In fact, when deciding whether to rent a car or not, save pesos by renting a car for a day trip or two rather than for your entire stay. With the plentiful murals and dozens of hidden gems throughout the city, you’ll love the leisurely walks and lively downtown ambience.

Pre-Planning

American Transfers Cancun

Once your accommodations are taken care of, ask your booking agent about important details such as airport transfers. Playa del Carmen is approximately 40 minutes south of the Cancun International Airport. Walking through the corridor of sales booths after customs can be daunting for a first time visitor. It’s best to book your airport transfer before you arrive. The round-trip cost for a private van ranges from $100 to $120 USD for a couple and approximately $149 USD for up to 8 passengers with reputable companies such as American Transfers Cancun (+52 998 201 -1720.) With your private transportation booked, you’ll bypass the sales pitches and head straight out the door to find your bilingual driver holding a sign with your name on it.

Tip: If you’ve booked at an all-inclusive, your airport transfer is typically included. It’s important to know that these vans or buses are shared and you may have several drops before you arrive at your destination.

As well as arranging for transportation, you may want to consider an add-on service to enhance your stay. For example, schedule a grocery delivery to your condo or villa prior to your arrival. Having your fridge stocked with essentials like bread, fruit, snacks, coffee, and cold cervezas prompts a seamless slip into vacation mode.

Naturally, when planning a beach vacation, plenty of relaxation in the sun and sand is top on the agenda. No regimented timelines; no stressful schedules. That being said, with so many scenic and fun-filled water parks near Playa del Carmen, you’ll want to include at least one in your itinerary. If possible, go to the Xcaret webpage to book at least 7 days in advance and receive up to 15% off admission prices. The savings can be enough to cover a delectable dinner out!

Packing Tips For A Travel and First Aid Kit

Packing Tips For Playa del Carmen

Indeed, packing a travel and first aid kit for your Mexico vacation is a must. A waterproof pouch for your cell phone comes in handy when visiting nearby adventure parks like Xplor, Xel Ha, or Xcaret. Also, adding a pen in your passport carrier will make your life easier. If not, you’ll need to track one down in order to fill out the arrival forms either on the plane or once you enter the customs lineup. Furthermore, don’t leave home without biodegradable sunblock from brands such as Thinksport or Kokua Sun Care.

To avoid nausea on a catamaran trip across the Caribbean or a ferry ride to Cozumel, Gravol with Ginger is a top choice and won’t make you drowsy. An eco-friendly mosquito spray like TerraShield will prove useful in the evenings. Lastly, a cool AloeVera gel will soothe the skin after being out in the sun all day.

Regarding keepsake and expensive jewels, keep it simple when choosing what to bring with you to Mexico. Stick to the theme— the beach life equals the simple life. If you must pack a nice piece of jewelry on your travels, it’s imperative you lock it in the safe when you’re not wearing it.

Plus, take a proactive approach by locking your bags when checking them at the airport. Finally, you’ll want to take photos of your important documents including your passport and tourist visa. Also, make copies of online documents that you may not have access to should the internet connection be interrupted.

You Have Arrived!

Welcome To Paradise

Welcome to paradise! You’re one step closer to seaside palms swaying in the breeze and sipping cocktails with your toes in the sand. But first things first.

Upon arrival, you’ll be required to fill out an immigration card. The lower portion will be stamped and returned to you. It is imperative that you keep this safe as it is your tourist card. You’ll need it to exit the country. However, should it be misplaced,  a copy can be requested at the immigration office at Cancun International Airport for a filing fee of about $40 USD.

Money Matters

With regards to exchanging money, the most stress-free process is to order it before you come. In particular, if you have only Canadian dollars or Euros, your currency is a bit more complicated to exchange. You’ll want to have a few thousand pesos on hand for tips and day trips like cenotes. At the time of writing, $4000 MXN pesos is about $260 CDN. In order to keep with the hassle-free theme of the trip, request $50 and $20 peso bills for tipping and the remainder in $200s and $100s. This is a good amount to start with and you won’t have to worry about locating an ATM.

Most places do except USD, but the smaller family-owned businesses accept cash in the local currency. For a nice dinner out or to purchase a more pricey souvenir, credit cards are widely accepted. In any case, do not let the person handling your card take it out of your view. Fraud happens around the world, and Mexico is no exception.

Should your cash funds run low, you can always make a withdrawal at an ATM in town. Overall, refrain from using ATMs in hotels and all freestanding ones in the streets. Since these machines are usually compromised, it’s best to get money from an ATM within a bank.

Tip: When making an ATM withdrawal, consider taking out one larger sum rather than several smaller sums over the course of your trip. This will save you a considerable amount on fees.

If you’re American, you can exchange USD for pesos at Casas de Cambio (money exchange houses) at the many convenient downtown locations. Most banks in town now require you to have an account in order to exchange money.

During Your Stay

We get it, you’ve arrived to the land where tequila and good times flow. But after a day of flying, in combination with the Riviera Maya heat, dehydration can set in faster than heartburn after a batch of flaming hot wings. So keep sipping bottled water while the bartender mixes another round. Your future self will thank you.

Concerning taxi service, try to hail a cab outside of the main taxi stands (where there is a grouping of taxis.) At these official sites, prices are posted and fixed according to the area’s zones. Since these sites typically cater to tourists, they are more expensive. Instead, hop in a taxi one block over to negotiate a local price. As a rule, you and the driver should agree to a price before you get in.

Grocery Shopping In Playa del Carmen

In the case of grocery shopping, there are a few supermarket chains in the downtown area of Playa del Carmen. Within these superstores, you can find everything under one roof from alcohol to a bath mat. Mega Soriana is located on Constituyentes and 30th Avenue, while just down the road is Walmart on 30th and Calle 10. When staying in Playacar on the city’s south end, the Soriana in the Centro Maya Mall is your closest option.

For specialty items, Dac on 30th Avenue and Calle 20 is a popular market. Here, you can purchase gluten free items, a broad variety of fresh herbs and produce, as well as imported cheeses. When choosing a bottle of tequila, you can sample options at various shops running along the 5th Avenue strip. On the other hand, La Europea in the Quinta Alegría mall on 5th Avenue and Constituyentes is a one-stop shop for premium liquors, wines, and high-end deli items.

All-Weather Activities

With over 200 days of sun a year, it’s no wonder Playa del Carmen is one of the world’s preferred beach destinations. Besides the intriguing year round summer season, we do unfortunately have a time frame when sargassum invades the coastline. Although completely unpredictable, the very hot weather in the summer months tends to be the worst period for sargassum.

While the Federal and State governments continue to work towards solutions, including barriers to keep the sargassum away from the beaches, it is an ongoing issue. Nevertheless, there are groups monitoring the daily levels on the beaches. Our team of BRIC ambassadors and Riviera Maya experts connect with these groups on a daily basis and can offer the best options for clear beaches in the Mexican Caribbean. Plus, they can present a long list of alternatives for unforgettable fun and extraordinary adventures beyond the beach.

El Pueblito Cooking Class at Mayakoba

During the rainy season, the area still receives a fair amount of sunshine. Oftentimes, it will rain in the morning with blue skies in the afternoon or vice versa. Yet, it’s still a good idea to be prepared with a Plan B for the soggy days. Our best recommendations for excursions on rainy days are Rio Secreto, a spa day, cooking classes, or a food tour.

Explore The City’s Famous Dining, Shopping, and Entertainment District

Meandering the pedestrian-only 5th Avenue, with its endless shops and restaurants, also makes for an enjoyable day in Playa. Most storekeepers welcome a little bargaining. Nonetheless, they are there to make a living, so try to keep the mood light and respectful.

For good eats and frequent Mariachi performances, La Parrilla on Constituyentes and 5th Avenue is a longtime Playa fixture. The upper level provides a bird’s eye view of the effervescent La Quinta (5th Avenue), perfect for people watching. In addition to the delectable menu of Mexican favorites, their fishbowl margaritas will get the good times rolling.

Mariachi at La Parrilla, Playa del Carmen

Venture just off of 5th Avenue and you’ll encounter even more gems with exceptional local and international cuisine. Eateries such as Que Huevos (for brunch,) El Fogon (for tacos,), La Chochi Loka (for Mayan Cochinita Pibil,) and Luma Taverna del Mar (for an upscale Mediterranean dinner) are a few worth visiting.

Beach Clubs and Beautiful Boutique Hotel Vistas

The Thompson, Playa del Carmen

Another attribute of Playa del Carmen that makes visitors fans for life, is its array of beach clubs and dynamic rooftop pools. If you’re the type of traveler that appreciates seaside or poolside tranquility while soaking up the sun, vacation rentals are a divine accommodation choice. But if you’d like a taste of an all-inclusive experience for a day, book a day pass to a resort in town through resortpass.com.

Along with the best day pass rates, you’ll find picturesque views at stylish properties including The Fives, Thompson, The Reef 28, or Grand Hyatt. For the best Caribbean ambience and cheerful Mexican service, we recommend local beach clubs like Zenzi, Lido, and INTI.

Leaving On A Jet Plane

Fight From Cancun International Airport

All good things must come to an end. When it’s time to go, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport. A minimum of two to three hours is recommended. While you wait, you can visit the food court and peruse the many souvenir shops. Note that tequila and salsas should be bought before you head to the airport. You’ll want to tuck them into your checked bags, otherwise, they’ll be confiscated at security. Passengers are not allowed to bring more than 100ml (3.4 oz) containers of liquid in a carry-on bag.

No matter where you choose to stay, we hope your vacation is everything you imagine it to be and more. For additional tips on where to eat, what to see, and things to do in Playa del Carmen, we invite you to visit our monthly blog. Happy and safe travels!

Besides its warm Caribbean waters and white sand beaches, visitors love the infinite possibilities for to satisfy their taste buds. Playa is renowned for its extensive repertoire of divine local and international flavors. The diversity of menus, thanks to a flourishing expat community, enhance an already extensive list of magnificent Mexican cuisine offerings.

In this sublime seaside paradise, you’re able to sample exquisite plates created by some of Mexico’s finest chefs. However, there are also plenty of opportunities to delve into tasty dishes that cost less than a burger combo in your hometown. In this article, you’ll discover Playa del Carmen’s top restaurants featuring unassuming culinary stars and budget-friendly menus.

1. XG Sabor Extra

(10th Avenue in between Avenida Luis Donaldo Colosio and Calle 74)

Enchiladas at XG Sabor Extra, Playa del Carmen

As the saying goes, “When in Mexico, do as the Mexicans do.” Alright, we put our own spin on the popular saying, but it’s especially true when you’re in Mexico. You don’t want to miss out on the authentic flavors of this renowned cuisine.

So if your tastebuds are looking for a Mexican fiesta, we recommend starting at XG Sabor on the north side of Playa del Carmen. There’s a beautiful public beach close by with a cenote near its white shoreline (Playa Punta Esmeralda just past Calle 100.) Before spending a day in the sun and surf, stop by to pick up lunch at this beloved local diner.

From enchiladas and tortas to chile rellenos and chicken tinga, the authentic tastes are a delightful presentation of Mexcian home cooking. Not to mention, these casual plates will set you back less than $5.00, including a non-alcoholic beverage. Buen provecho!

2. Pollo Feliz

(Constituyentes and Avenida 100 Norte)

Pollo Feliz, Playa del Carmen

This family and budget-friendly restaurant is out of the tourist hub, but is worth exploring. This popular Mexican franchise is known for its rotisserie chicken served with fresh, homemade corn tortillas, grilled jalapeño salsa, and fluffy red rice.

An order of horchata (sweetened rice milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon) or jamaica juice perfectly complements the meal. A family of five can leave with full bellies for approximately $25 USD— take that McDonalds!

3. El Fogon

(Three downtown Playa del Carmen locations)

El Fogon Tacos, Playa del Carmen

Tacos for a dollar? You don’t have to wait until Tuesday to sink your teeth into these delicious Mexican fare all-stars. The cooks designated to the revolving spit-grilled pork are geniuses when it comes to tacos al pastor. These tender bites of pork are a mouthful of goodness when served on warm tortillas with a slice of pineapple and spicy salsa.

El Fogon has three downtown locations, on Calle 8, Constituyentes, as well as on 30th Avenue. Each eatery is busy, but typically has a quick turnover. After a day at the beach, or a night of dancing, you’ll find the tasty tacos are an ideal end to a memorable day in the Riviera Maya.

4. Green & Fit

(10th Avenue & Calle 24)

Green & Fit, Playa del Carmen

Green & Fit is one of the top restaurants we like to recommend for healthy and flavorful options. In addition to a fresh and diverse assortment of build-your-own-salad ingredients, you can count on pleasant prices.

From medium-sized salad starting at $96 Mxn Pesos ($4.75 USD) to crispy paninis and poke bowls, this is a go-to favorite if you want to eat well on a budget. Besides sensational salads, their signature green juice, made with cucumber, mint, and lime, is as refreshing as a day at the beach.

5. El Gran Taco

(Calle Diagonal 70 Across the street to the North from Centro Maya Mall on the South end of Playa del Carmen)

This is a must stop if you want to taste the true flavors of Mexico. The menu is vast and can be overwhelming for first-timers. More than a dozen ceramic pots of taco fillings are prepared fresh daily. Choose to stuff your warmed corn tacos with heaping piles of goodness such as pulled pork or chicken in a green salsa. Furthermore, the picadillo (a classic seasoned ground beef with potato mixture,) or rajas (roasted poblano peppers in a savory cream sauce) are top picks.

In addition to tacos, this is the place to try gorditas exploding with robust mole, or flautas drizzled in crema and queso. Their yummy variation on the horchata rice milk drink comes with an added touch of coconut, which sells out quickly.

6. Ferron’s Jerk Chicken

(Avenue 105 between Constituyentes and 30 Bis)

Ferron's Jerk Chicken, Playa del Carmen

Ferron’s is a longtime local favorite for its famous jamaican jerk chicken and reasonable prices. In addition, the zesty jerk marinade can be enjoyed on their finger-licking good ribs. Their recipe for crispy fried chicken is hard to beat. Plus, after sampling the creamy mac and cheese, velvety mashed potatoes, and warm rolls bring, it’s easy to see why customers return time and time again.

Having been around for a decade, the word is out on this gem on the other side of the highway. Without a doubt, it has earned its TripAdvisor Award of Excellence for the last five years running. Ferron’s is open from 12 p.m. to 6:00 p.m everyday except for Mondays. If you can’t make it across town, have it delivered. It makes for a perfect picnic on the beach!

7. La Brocherie Rotisserie

(15th Avenue between Calle 4 and 6)

La Brocherie Rotisserie, Playa del Carmen

We love this French-style bistro for its chicken roasted with Herb de Provence. It’s a busy place in the evenings so you may have to wait, especially on the nights they serve their rich le Boeuf Bourguignon or mouthwatering mussels.

The owner frequently walks through the restaurant to engage with patrons, which adds a warm and welcoming touch. The charming French experience begins with appetizers in the form of pate and creamy cheese platters. The rave-worthy cuisine continues throughout the meal and is completed with a sumptuous assortment of desserts. The creme brulee and chocolate mousse will blow your mind, as will the amount of the check! It’s a superb Playa del Carmen dining experience for a fraction of what you’d expect to pay.

8. Don Sirloin

(Three central locations)

Another hit on Playa del Carmen’s taqueria scene, Don Sirloin’s steak tacos are palate-pleasers. Also deserving a mention are the cheese fondues (Quesos Fundidos) and the arrachera tortas (grilled flank steak sandwiches.)

This is a perfect place to mingle with the local crowd and enjoy a cold $2.50 cerveza. The open-air eateries are conveniently located near the city center on 10th Avenue, Constituyentes and 30th Avenue. Don Sirloin’s vibrant atmosphere is an ideal for people-watching or catching an important soccer match.

9. La Tarraya

(Calle 2 and the beach)

La Tarraya, Playa del Carmen

If you’re in search of a table with a view, La Tarraya is a fantastic option. Nibble on fish tacos  and breaded fish fillets (pescado empanizado) all the while absorbing the direct Caribbean vista. Toes in the powdery sand; tables under the coconut palms; there’s no better place for a budget-friendly meal and a margarita on the beach.

Other favorites include Fajitas with a combination of fried peppers and tender chicken. The habanero salsa is one of the best in town, but be warned! It lights a fire going down, so a little goes a long way.

10. Doña Mary

(Calle 28 & 30th Avenue)

Open at 3:30 in the afternoon, this is a very typical casual Mexican eatery with plastic tables and Coca Cola chairs. The ambiance is spirited, while the food is simple and authentic. Doña Mary’s presents a charming glimpse into the Mexican and Yucatecan culture.

Menu marvels include the empanadas— deep-fried, thin pockets filled with shredded pork, chicken, or cheese. Topped with sour cream, lettuce and the house salsa, the flavors are not the only thing to love. What’s really hard to believe is that these tasty little delights are less than a buck a piece!  Without a doubt, an agua natural, is the perfect accompaniment when it comes to a traditional Mexican meal. These blended fruit waters are available in a variety of exotic flavors such as Tamarind and Jamaica (hibiscus.)

With this list in mind, we hope that you’ll not only save money, but also taste the incredible flavors of Mexico. 7 Picturesque Places in Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya

As for the Mexican Caribbean, we can all agree that its number one scenic attraction is its glorious palm-fringed coastline. Yet, this tropical dreamland’s beauty stretches far beyond its shimmering turquoise waters and sun-kissed beaches.

The area’s diverse ecosystems include flourishing coral reefs, emerald lagoons, and lush low lying jungle. In addition, the longest underground river in the world weaves its way through thousands of limestone caves in the region. Without a doubt, the Riviera Maya region brims with outstanding land and seascapes as far as the eye can see. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we’re sharing our top 7 striking locations you’ll be grateful you added to your vacation itinerary.

Xcaret Park

Xcaret Park, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya

Due to its diverse catalogue of pristine topography, Xcaret Park is the leader on our list of beautiful places in Playa del Carmen. Among the eco-friendly park’s features are crystal clear bays for snorkeling, water slides dipping into pools engulfed by jungle and cascading waterfalls, as well as a cathedral with an altar built upon a cenote. Not only do these breathtaking scenes paint a picturesque setting, but they also invite visitors to fully immerse themselves in the extraordinary nature of the Riviera Maya.

Some of the most vivid hideaways within the expansive aquatic paradise include Children’s World and the aquamarine river floats. Equally spectacular are the lush jungle trails leading through to the butterfly pavilion and the Caribbean pools carved along Xcaret’s rocky shoreline.

Rio Secreto

Rio Secreto, Playa del Carmen

Thanks to its mind-blowing centuries-old underground river system, Rio Secreto is an obvious choice for this list. Traipsing through the nature reserve’s turquoise waters, your eyes don’t have to search far for magnificent scenery. The caves and collections of translucent waters present stunning photo ops.

On the tour, your guide introduces you to remarkable local flora and fauna, while explaining the history of how the limestone mass of the Yucatan Peninsula came to be. What’s more, you’ll discover astounding stalagmites and stalactites around every corner. Formed from the accumulation of thousands of years of mineral deposits, these impressive geological formations are a sight to see.

Cenote Cristalino

Cenote Cristalino, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya

This is one of our favorite cenote swimming holes in the area. That’s no easy feat considering there are an estimated ten thousand cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula. A descending, manicured pathway forges ahead through the dense Mayan forest.

Following the scenic trail, you’ll come upon multiple pools of refreshing water fed by the underground river. Just before the main swimming area, a smaller wading pool sits amidst majestic Elephant Ear trees and fans of tropical palms.

Further along is a more grandiose, clear water pool with a modest cliff for jumping, if you feel adventurous. While two hours is adequate for exploring this popular Riviera Maya cenote, this splendid Mexican escapade is a blissful one. Soaking within the turquoise waters of a natural, limestone pool, enveloped by jungle brush, and blanketed by a vast blue sky— it’s an encounter with nature that you won’t soon forget.

A Beachfront Table At La Buena Vida

La Buena Vida, Akumal, Riviera Maya

Perched along the panoramic Half Moon Bay in Akumal, just 25 minutes south of Playa del Carmen is La Buena Vida Beach Club. This is a local hangout not many visitors know about. Sure, we’d like to keep this magical place all to ourselves. But it would be selfish to deny travelers the chance to experience its enchanting vibe.

Complete with hammocks, an infinity pool, and a mezzanine with tables overlooking the bay, this prime piece of Caribbean real estate is the perfect spot for piña coladas and picturesque views.

Alux Restaurant

Alux Restaurant, Playa del Carmen

Despite several visits to this remarkable restaurant and bar, Alux never ceases to amaze. Pockets within the caves set with tables and chandeliers make the ideal setting for romance in the Riviera Maya. Yet even if you’re solo, this dining experience is out of this world,

Whether you reserve a table in the principal dining room or just stop by for drinks in the lounge, keep your camera handy. It’s not everyday that you can dine or sip tequila in an underground cavern. Strategically-placed spotlights showcase the remarkable cenotes, trickling waterfalls, and natural displays of mineral deposits. We suggest you combine this surreal setting with a select Mexican wine from La Cava wine cellar. That friend, is the making of an unforgettable visit at one of the most unique restaurants on the planet.

El Cielo

El Cielo, Cozumel

Named after heaven itself, El Cielo’s clear blue waters are an intoxicating sight. As you anchor in the bay, which is only accessible by boat, you will be blown away by the clarity and visibility as far as the eye can see. Poised in your tour vessel, you can observe manta rays and sea turtles gliding along the seafloor.

The depth of the water ranges from waist deep to five feet at most points and is perfect for people of all ages. To have face to face encounters with these majestic marine species is like being part of a National Geographic documentary. The vibrant coral reefs and unmatched Caribbean vistas are impressive in every sense of the word. But the waters in this cove, comparable to any Maldives photo you’ve ever fantasized over, are epic.

El Camaleon Golf Course at Mayakoba

El Camaleon at Mayakoba, Playa del Carmen

If you’re a fan of golf, you may have watched some of the greats vie for the purse at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen. Although the PGA’s team does a superb job of highlighting the action, it’s impossible to capture the entire beauty of El Camaleon’s pristine land and seascapes

Boats shuttle Rosewood Mayakoba guests to water suites along the canals. Exotic vegetation borders verdant stretches of exquisitely manicured fairways. Perfectly coiffed Par 3s overlook stunning expanses of turquoise sea. Not to mention, the incredible limestone cenotes that dot the picturesque 7024-yard course.

Although spectators are not allowed at this year’s popular PGA Tour stop, the outstanding course is open to the public the remainder of the year.

We could go on and on about the endless postcard-worthy gems in and around Playa del Carmen. But we’ll leave you with this list as a good starting point. For more information on other hidden treasures in the Riviera Maya region, ask your friendly Bric ambassador. Your designated regional expert is a wealth of information and can also help you coordinate transportation and private tours.

In keeping with the mood of this holiday of gratitude, our team appreciates every opportunity to serve you. It’s a great pleasure to share the best this seaside paradise has to offer with visitors from around the world. From our family to yours, we wish you an abundance of things to be grateful for.

Travel During The Pandemic

Pandemic. Covid-19. New cases. Self-isolate. The headlines continue to cover the front pages of every news publication, while dominating radio and television station airtime. Despite being utterly fed up with this virus and the ongoing havoc it wreaks, the world must remain tuned in. Indeed, reviewing advisories and understanding the regulations of both your own country and those of your chosen destination are essential for safe travel.

The Riviera Maya Is Ready To Welcome Visitors Back

Undoubtedly, Mexico’s Riviera Maya is a region that heavily relies upon tourism. Thus, businesses in the area were quick to implement new sanitary standards established by the World Travel & Tourism Council for health protection. Hotels and rental providers like Bric Vacation Rentals wasted no time in training staff and applying elevated safety measures. For this reason, the state of Quintana Roo has been able to advance to the “Yellow” level of the country’s Coronavirus Traffic Light Monitoring System.

Riviera Maya, Mexico in Yellow Phase

If you’re wondering about things to do in Playa del Carmen in this “Yellow’ phase, there are still plenty of attractions that are open with social distancing in practice. Archaeological sites including Coba, Tulum, and Chichen Itza are open, but limited to 60% capacity, as are hotels and restaurants. While the adventure parks and beaches in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel are also open, night clubs remain closed. Plus it’s important to note that masks are mandatory in all public places unless you’re sitting down to eat.

No matter what city you’re in these days, similar rules apply. We’ve all become accustomed to hand sanitizers and staying 6 feet apart. Since no one wants to take a step back, tourist regions like Playa del Carmen are investing in further precautions. Extra safeguards including thermal scanner temperature readings are being enforced from the Cancun Airport to grocery stores. In addition, many businesses have sanitary mats to clean your shoes upon entering.

Thus far, the government of Mexico has decided not to have a mandated self-isolation period for those entering the country. However, if the thermal imaging cameras detect at the airport detect a fever, you may be required to quarantine or even sent back to your home country.

Before You Book Your Trip

Reserving your stay with Bric means that you can rest assured with our flexible cancellation or change policies. At this time, in order to limit physical contact, mid-stay cleaning services have been eliminated and distance check-ins are available upon request. Maintenance, housekeeping, and ambassador personnel remain vigilant in adapting rigorous prevention and safety measures.

Though many airlines have nixed change fees, it’s important to speak directly to an airline customer service agent to fully understand their policies. While airlines such as Westjet may give you up to 24 months to use a travel credit, others may give only until the end of December or up to one year to travel. Moreover, there’s a good chance that you’ll be required to pay the difference in fares.

Tip:

Before you go to the airport, call the airline or check flights online to confirm flight departures or to view changes.

Be sure to stock up on sanitary wipes, masks, and food for the flights as some air carriers have cancelled in-flight food and beverage service. For extra peace of mind, use disinfectant wipes to clean the seat and surfaces in your area.

It’s always a good idea to call your insurance provider before you travel. Indeed confirming the details of the fine print has never been more crucial. Many travelers have enjoyed stress-free vacations in Mexico since the pandemic burst onto the world scene. In any case, double-check if there have been amendments to your policy that you should be aware of.

According to the Vancouver Sun, the government of Canada plans to order several million rapid tests by the end of this year, promising to make results available within 90 minutes. At Calgary Airport, international travelers will have the option to take an expedited COVID-19 test, which would replace the 14-day quarantine period Canadians face when returning from travel abroad. Last month American Airlines joined United Airlines, Hawaiin Airlines, and JetBlue Airways in offering pre-flight tests to international travelers.

Transportation Services

The downtown Playa del Carmen ferries continue to offer regular roundtrip sailings to Cozumel. Be advised the two companies are currently alternaternating departures, rather than providing trips every hour on the hour. Taxis, ADO buses, and private van shuttles are operating at limited capacity.

Cancun to Playa del Carmen Airport Transfers

Playa del Carmen Attractions Open For Business

The majority of the eco and adventure parks, archaeological sites, and cenotes are operating at limited capacity. Booking online ahead of time is not only necessary, but can save you money. For more information on private tour options it’s helpful to get in touch with your designated Bric ambassador prior to your arrival. From secluded bays and emerald lagoons to underground cave expeditions and thrilling zipline circuits, the list for fun is endless.

The south end of the city’s famed 5th Avenue is still in the remodeling phase. Despite ongoing construction, many artisan stores, the Quinta Alegria mall, as well as dozens of beach clubs and restaurants are happy to serve visitors.

And the flavors? Well let’s just say they’re as delightful as a dip in the clear blue waters of the Caribbean. My favorite apartments in PDC!

The only apartments with a beach. Currently there is no sargassum and the beach is very beautiful. The sea is super clean and very comfortable to get into.
In the “beach club”  there are massages at a super good price and delicious prepared drinks  also at reasonable prices. The apartments are spacious and have excellent customer service from Bric, Miguel Hernández gave us the service and everything was excellent. The pool is salt water and always in excellent condition. In my opinion the salty pool is the best !!

Here’s what Cristina, who stayed at Casa Paraíso wrote:

Kristin’s space is beautiful, there is a lot of nature and tranquility around. The security of Playacar is irreplaceable and the beach is beautiful, both Kristin and Ivonne are friendly and polite hosts and very present for any question, without a doubt and excellent place to stay.

Playa del Carmen Vacation Rentals On Any Budget

Autumn has arrived and the leaves aren’t the only thing that are falling. Dropping temperatures cue snowbirds and sun seekers alike to begin planning for warm weather escapes. As travel restrictions lift and daily flights to Cancun resume, the future looks promising if you’re ready to travel internationally.

After weighing all the factors, you’ve determined that a trip to the beach will do your mind and body well. Unlike other countries, Mexico doesn’t require a negative Covid-19 test upon entering. Nor is there an imposed quarantine period. Consequently, travelers seeking sun and sand are viewing destinations like Playa del Carmen in Mexico’s Riviera Maya as the perfect getaway.

Benefits of A Vacation Rental Versus An All-Inclusive Hotel

In the time of social distancing, a vacation rental makes complete sense. Do you envision waking up to a turquoise seascape? Are you a margaritas by the pool type or do you prefer your toes buried in a sandy beach? Whichever type of traveler you are, Bric has the ideal rental option for you. But it’s important to note that when you choose a condo or villa accommodation, you share the property’s facilities with far fewer people (if any.) Keeping 6 feet apart is almost effortless.

Moreover, there are no banquet rooms with a hundred people eating under the same roof. In a private rental, you have varying options at your disposal. From grocery delivery to restaurant take-out to a chef service, there are plenty of ways to avoid large gatherings. Nevertheless, you can still enjoy a sensational meal at one of Playa del Carmen’s exceptional restaurants. Most have reopened with strict safety guidelines. Protocols include operating at 60% capacity, mandatory masks for staff, and scannable Quick Response codes displaying the menus on your smartphone.

12 Benefits of a Playa del Carmen Beach Vacation

Travel offers a wide range of life-enhancing benefits. From teaching tolerance and problem-solving skills to decreasing symptoms of depression and anxiety a vacation does the body good. A getaway allows for an escape from the ordinary. It’s an exciting and necessary break from the mundane trap of a monotonous schedule.

A holiday in Playa del Carmen is no exception! Here are 12 evident ways that a beach vacation has a positive effect on your body, mind and soul. Life moves fast. It’s time to slow down the pace and spend time in one of the Riviera Maya’s most award-winning destinations.

Develop A Feeling of Pride and Confidence

Family trip Playa del Carmen

Along with the good memories, you’ll also carry back with you a sense of pride. It takes courage to successfully navigate a foreign airport and city. Small wins such as boarding local colectivos to swim in a magnificent cenote can give your confidence a huge boost. Moreover, renting a car to explore ancient architecture, ‘Magic Towns’ or quaint islands can  further develop a sense of accomplishment.

Sure there’s a multitude of things to see and do in Playa del Carmen’s downtown core. But try meandering one or two blocks north of 5th Avenue for a change. You never know when you’ll stumble upon a fantastic eatery – there are hundreds of them! As you venture off the well-trodden path, you may just come across the most sensational meal of your trip. If you’re staying in a vacation rental, regular outings such as a trip to the grocery store present prime opportunities to increase your Spanish vocabulary. Developing the ability to converse in a foreign language, even at a basic level, can cultivate a feeling of pride.

Become More Open-Minded

We understand that foreigners are bombarded with negative press about Mexico every other week.  Of course, without firsthand experience, the country seems like the wild wild West. But for those who get that most news stories are highly sensationalized, travel to Playa del Carmen garners huge rewards. By foregoing the advice of skeptics, you’ll find your risk will pay off more than you could have ever imagined. Each year, millions of visitors are so delighted with their vacation experiences that they return to the Riviera Maya again and again.

Travelers gain insights through encountering a welcoming nation. Mexicans are very proud of their heritage, their music, and their food. They’re more than happy to share the enchanting side of their beloved country.

If you come at the end of October, there’s a good chance you’ll meet paraders with elaborately painted faces in the streets . The skeleton make-up is part of the deep-rooted festival, Dia de los Muertos. During Day of the Dead, families decorate altars, prepare customary foods, and organize cemetery processions to remember loved ones who have passed.

dia de los muertos piqsels

Traveling to a new county and meeting its citizens allows a glimpse into their way of life. You comprehend better their value system and why the culture is the way it is. One thing that Mexicans hold most dear besides their families and their Mariachi music, is their tequila. While Jose Cuervo is at the center of many college parties, Mexicans opt to sip their cherished national treasure.

If you can, resist the persuasive tequila-slinging bartender at Coco Bongo, and instead stop by a specialty store on 5th Avenue. An introduction to some of the nations finest tequilas will develop an new appreciation for the  distinctive spirit.

Relax, Rejuvenate and Be Inspired By The Great Outdoors

Spending your days immersed in breathtaking nature, your soul cannot help but be soothed. Plus, long walks on the beach or scaling Mayan pyramids are perfect for incorporating some feel-good exercise into your vacation. Not to mention, the activity will help burn off the extra taco and piña colada calories.

Couple on Beach, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

In addition to the benefits of exercise, you’re body will benefit without exerting much effort at all. Lounging on the sun-soaked beaches of Playa del Carmen, will give your body its required dose of Vitamin D.

Be Exposed To Authentic Tastes Beyond The Burrito

Mexican cuisine is a delightful mix of complex flavors. (Think mole, which boasts a list of over thirty, perfectly blended ingredients). Just as chicken balls are not authentic in Chinese cuisine, burritos are not exactly a staple on a Mexican menu.

One well-known chef, Rick Bayliss, has travelled throughout Mexico and his popular TV show documents his culinary adventures. His passion for Mexican cuisine is highlighted in each episode as he explores the traditional dishes of each region.

Since Playa del Carmen’s community consists of a wonderful mix of residents from around Mexico, you can be sure to discover a diverse range of enticing plates. For breakfast try chilaquiles, juevos rancheros or saucy enchiladas. For lunch, a light ceviche or seafood tostada with an ojo rojo is a popular combo here in Playa. As for dinner, tender arrachera flank steaks or tacos al pastor are both delicious options.

Step Outside Your Comfort Zone For Unforgettable Experiences

There is no better way to grow and challenge your regular threshold of comfort than to take an international trip. Things like losing your luggage and facing language barriers tend to uncover new character traits you never knew you had.

Here in Playa del Carmen, there are several ways to ease you past your comfort boundaries. For example, one of the most exhilarating ways to overcome a fear of heights is to take the leap from the modest platforms at local cenotes.  It may take several repetitions of ‘I think I can, I think I can’ to cliff jump or to climb to the peak of Coba’s highest temple. But the feeling of satisfaction is worth the initial discomfort. Besides, the view from the top is pretty spectacular. Each time you do something that extends beyond your comfort zone, the world seems to open up just a little more. Around each corner, new facets of its extraordinary beauty are revealed.

Diving in the open sea is another extraordinary way to test the borders of your comfort level. Thanks to its close proximity to the second largest barrier reef in the world, Playa del Carmen is a renowned diving destination. Scattered throughout the city are excellent dive shops with certified instructors. With decades of experience under their belt, they’ll guide you towards plenty of surreal underwater moments that will be hard to forget.

See Mexico In A Different Light

Every culture has its fair share of stereotypes. But to allow labels to deter you from visiting a country will cost you some priceless travel experiences. During my family’s first year in Mexico, my mother and sister visited. The group was up for an adventure. So we booked a hotel in Valladolid, a charming colonial town  located an hour and a half from Playa del Carmen.

On the way, we took a short cut in search of a new toll road that would trim the traveling time. It wasn’t long before our van load of precious cargo was bouncing over a rough, jungle path surrounded thick brush.

Just as we were trying to figure out how to turn back on the narrow trail, a teenage Mexican boy appeared from nowhere – carrying a machete. Given the situation, it was just like a scary movie and our first thought was we’re in trouble. This wasn’t going to end well.

The scruffy kid asked if we were lost and offered to lead us to the highway. He hopped on the running board, slung one hand around the mirror to hold on, and from the other hand, hung the rusted machete. As our crew recited prayers under our breath, we approached a clearing. It was the highway! Just as quickly as he had appeared, our guardian angel was off again. The kind stranger asked for nothing and simply waved before the jungle swallowed him once again.

Although Mexico was once considered a ‘Third World’ country, it is now listed according to the UN, in the ‘Upper Middle’ category in relation to its economy per capita. In fact, it’s rare to see donkeys strolling dirt roads or roosters riding the city bus. In Playa del Carmen, you can expect to find high-end dining establishments, Wi-Fi and modern accommodations comparable to any other cosmopolitan city in the world.

Encounter New Adventures

Due to its central location, Playa del Carmen offers convenient access to the hundreds of exhilarating adventures that abound in the Mexican Caribbean. For yogis, a class atop of paddle board on a scenic, jade-colored lagoon might sound alluring. Photography enthusiasts can brush up on their skills National Geographic-style. Envision capturing the perfect sunset over the jungle from the most unordinary vantage points,  including the peak of a Mayan pyramid.

Coba Mayan Ruins near Playa del Carmen, Mexico

All-be-it a thrill of a lifetime, skydiving may not be for everyone. However, you might have a change of heart when you arrive in Playa del Carmen. There are few descents in the world more spectacular than Playa’s turquoise seascape. If scuba diving is not your thing, you might love snorkeling alongside graceful turtles and stingrays in picturesque, tropical bays. The list of ideas for fun and adventure is as ceaseless as the warm weather in the Riviera Maya.

Make Lifelong Friendships

Winter VIP Party, Bric Hotel and Spa, Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is one of those magical places that spawns repeat visitors. One reason being that it’s an easy flight from most places in North America. The snowbird community continues to grow each year because it’s a perfect spot for retirees. The city is easy to navigate by foot and you can enjoy the beach lifestyle without being fluent in Spanish. There are exceptional restaurants with impeccable service. Staff such as the bartender at your favorite beach club or our Bric ambassadors remember your name and welcome you back as part of the family.

If you like to hit the links, Playa del Carmen offers several championship and PGA Tour courses. Golf presents a fantastic opportunity to form lasting friendships. Undoubtedly, you’ll meet other like-minded individuals who appreciate the game and the endless summer climate.

Develop Passion For Experiences Over Things

After traveling to stunning destinations like the Riviera Maya, you begin to reconsider material purchases. Justifying the purchase of a $400 wallet is hard when you know that instead, you could be diving off the picturesque shores of Playa del Carmen for less than that.

When people envision the beach, they think sun, sand, and margaritas. But the more time you spend near the sea, the more you realize the mystical powers of nature.  There is no denying that nature enhances your life in ways material things cannot. The priceless beauty of a sunrise over the Caribbean, the rhythmic sounds of the waves, happy people all along the shore, without a television, an X-box, or a cell phone in sight. The treasures you find in Playa are far more valuable than anything money can buy.

Although you can find a fantastic selection of luxurious products in the designer stores and boutiques that line 5th Avenue, it’s easy to be steered away from the material life. In this little piece of paradise, there are endless simple pleasures to indulge in.

Cenote Caleta Tankah, Riviera Maya

The easy-breezy lifestyle is one of the many factors that transform so many temporary visitors to residents. Being surrounded by endless opportunities to live in a peaceful harmony with nature, incites a passion for exploration beyond the shops on 5th Avenue.

Make Memories And Receive Real-life Education All In One

If you come to the Riviera Maya in the spring, you can witness a re-enactment of the sacred Mayan Journey. This lively three-day ceremony begins at the remarkable ecological park, Xcaret near Playa del Carmen. Besides swimming in underground rivers, seeing jellyfish and seahorses at the aquarium, or feeding tropical birds in a man-size birdcage, you can watch history come alive.

The popular event is held in remembrance of the pilgrimage Mayan women and men made hundreds of years ago. Groups would cross the Caribbean towards the island of Cozumel in hallowed out Ceiba trees. They’d travel a grueling seven hours to bring offerings for Ixchel, the Goddess of fertility.

As a spectator, you have a chance to view the festivities surrounding the sacred journey. Not only are the rowers, who have trained for months prior, an inspiration, but the event also shines an enlightening perspective on the area’s first civilization.

Provides A Change Of Scenery During A Long, Cold Winter

Winters can drag on with incessant freezing temperatures making you impatient for spring. Planning a trip to Playa del Carmen can give you something to look forward to. Most importantly, an exotic getaway provides a much-needed break from the overcast skies and frosty windshields.

Oceana Condo-Hotel by Bric Vacation Rentals, Playa del Carmen

If you daydream of waking up to sunshine and palm trees, our professional Bric hospitality team can help with that. With pleasure, we’ll offer guidance as you design your ideal version of a trip to paradise. Trade in the clunky winter boots for a pair of flip-flops. Even if you can only manage a few days away from the office, a long weekend getaway serves the body, mind, and soul well.

A Great Conversation Starter

It is said that travel makes you speechless then turns you into a storyteller. Striking up a travel conversation is always a safe and engaging topic no matter the occasion. Travelers love to recall their most memorable moments from their trips. Even for those who have never left their hometown, everyone has a bucket list with a special destination they’d like to see and experience.

A trip to Playa del Carmen will give you more than enough fuel to stoke a stimulating conversation at your next event. From the tope (infamous Mexican speed bump) that snuck up on you and sent your rental car soaring, to a night of dancing under the stars, each trip provides more than enough entertaining anecdotes.

Resources For Planning A Riviera Maya Vacation

If you’re planning an upcoming trip to the Riviera Maya, it helps to do some research beforehand so you can prepare for a stress-free vacation. First-time visitors typically want to know where to stay, what the best things to do are, and how to stay safe.

In general, when traveling to any destination, certain precautions should be taken. Travel tips such as never leaving your luggage unattended, using ATM machines only in banks, and drinking responsibly are good pieces of advice wherever you go.

The Riviera Maya is one of the safest exotic destinations on the planet visited by over 4 million annual travelers. The most common troubles visitors face are sunburns the dreaded Montezuma’s Revenge.

Besides packing environmentally safe sunscreens and Pepto-Bismol tablets, there are a few simple things you can do to steer you away from trouble in Mexico. More safety tips to come, but first, let’s get to know this divine destination better.

What Is The Riviera Maya and Which Town Suits Your Needs Best

The Riviera Maya is comprised of an over one hundred kilometre stretch of white sand beaches along Mexico’s Caribbean coast. This wondrous natural playground begins at Puerto Morelos and continues south just past Tulum. Dozens of adult-only, family-friendly and ultra-luxurious all-inclusive resorts run along this spellbinding corridor.

The tropical climate is one of the most appealing draws with an average eternal summer temperature of 30 degrees Celsius. With numerous protected biospheres and an extensive jungle speckled with the abandoned remains of an ancient civilization, the natural beauty and fun-filled activities are endless.

Beautiful Beaches and Bustling Towns

Just a handful of seaside towns occupy the captivating coastline, each with its own set of attractive characteristics. Puerto Morelos (20 minutes south of the airport) is a quaint village with one central square from which all of the action stems from. It is a popular destination for snowbirds as expats can easily integrate into the community and enjoy a peaceful existence. There are a few delightful restaurants, cafés and beach clubs surrounding the main square along with souvenir and ice cream shops.

Puerto Morelos Activities

Continuing twenty minutes south is Playa del Carmen, the Heart of the Riviera Maya (40 minutes south of the airport). Once a small fishing village, it is now a vibrant, metropolitan city with a multitude of options for dining and entertainment.

Despite its easy-breezy ambience, an abundance of upscale restaurants, luxury hotels, brand name and boutique stores give the city its sophisticated essence.

Playa has everything you could possibly need for a traveler’s comfort and convenience. There are banks, hospitals, and consular agencies for Canada, the United States, Italy, and France. In addition, you can find every type of cuisine, big box supermarkets and specialty health food stores. Next on the map is Puerto Aventuras (55 minutes south of the airport) yet another enchanting seaside destination.
