After deciding to make our move to Mexico, my husband and I began our house search in Cancun. There were several draws— the close proximity to the international airport, the beach, and the beach! However, the sprawling city of over one million people, with its traffic and fast pace was not the life we had in mind. Fortunately, an acquaintance suggested Playa del Carmen, about an hour south, in the heart of the Riviera Maya.

Soon, we were in touch with a local realtor, who met us in Playacar, a gated community just off the 307 Federal Highway. Upon entering through the main security caseta (booth), we noticed a golf cart cruising leisurely on the cobblestone road. Driving up alongside the golf cart, my husband and I smiled at each other. We had been in Playa del Carmen for not more than ten minutes. But that was all it took to realize with 100% certainty that we had found our new home.

Located on the south end of Playa del Carmen, Playacar has two gated phases, Fase I and Fase II. Fase I is closer to the beach and is mostly residential with a couple of hotels. The main visitor entrance is on the north end at 10th Avenue.

The Playacar stretch of sand is one of the best in town as it tends to be less crowded than the beaches in the downtown core. There are no lively beach clubs in Playacar, which makes this part of the coastline ideal for spreading out on a blanket with a good beach read and a cooler of ice cold cervesas. Alternatively, if you are curious about the city’s main beach clubs, they are only about a 15 to 20 minute leisurely walk from most of Bric’s Playacar rentals.

The principal access to the beach is through the gate adjacent to the Reef Playacar Resort. Situated almost directly across from Paseo del Sol on Paseo Xaman-Ha in Playacar, is the door to paradise! All guests staying in Playacar can gain entry to the white sand shoreline via this gateway. That being said, there is a limit of 4 per property. What Is Day Of The Dead

 

Celebrated on November 1 and 2nd, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is a deep-rooted cultural holiday in Mexico. In essence,  it’s a time when families and friends gather to commemorate the lives of those who’ve passed and honor their journey in the afterlife. 

 

 

It is said that on the 1st of November, the spirits of the children who have passed come to reunite with their families. While on the 2nd of November, the adults make their return to their beloved kin. Those still living believe that if the spirits are kept happy, they will provide the family with protection, wisdom, and good fortune. For this reason, some households spend more than a month’s income on the celebration.

 

Customs and Traditions

 

Perhaps the most relevant of the traditions of Day of the Dead is the creation of altars, or ofrendas. These shrines are erected in homes and cemeteries and decorated with customary items such as the marigold. Due to their pungent scent and deep orange color, the flowers are believed to attract the souls of the deceased to the offerings. Besides flowers, typical decor may include candles, food, tequila, and favorite toys and  trinkets of the departed. Loved ones believe that the offerings compel spirits to return for a temporary visit to commune with them.

 

 

Another important tradition is the calavera, or sugar skull. Colorful skulls, often made of sugar or chocolate, bear intricate designs created with bright colors. They sit adorning altars and are also gifted to friends and family members, usually children.

Attire can consist of black dresses, trousers, top hats or elegant sombreros, and bouquets of dead roses. Alternatively, some choose white suits or white embroidered tunics, called huipils, with flower crowns. The key factor is the painted skull face. This represents The Day of The Dead’s most iconic figure, La Calavera Catrina, who signifies the transition to the afterlife. Through this tradition, death denotes a festive tribute to the circle of life rather than an ending to be feared.

On the eve of November 2nd, families gather at cemeteries in candlelight processions. The gravesites are cleaned and transformed into unique altars. Food and drink are placed on the tombstones and mausoleums to be shared amongst the group, both the dead and alive. Along with refreshments, people bring instruments, sing songs, and share cherished memories of their dearly departed into the night.

The ‘tianguis’ is an important part of Mexican culture. Vendors set up booths typically in an open-air street market on a certain day of the week. You can find clothing, household items and utensils, tools, toys, street food, dried chiles, and much more. 

In Playa del Carmen, the market is a modest one. Nonetheless, it is still fun to browse and gives a sense of the local scene. The stands are set up Sundays on 10th Avenue beginning near Calle 58. Streets are closed off to traffic and the market tends to bustle from about 10am to 1pm.

A Bacalar And Los Rápidos Road Trip

 

Although it’s a bit of a trek, seeing the impressive Lagoon of Seven Colors in Bacalar is worth the car rental and 3-hour drive. The Magic Town (one of Mexico’s 132 Pueblos Magicos)  overlooks the picturesque body of water with its breathtaking hues of blues, greens, and sandy browns. Schedule a pontoon boat tour which sails to 2 different cenotes, bird island, as well as the Canal de Los Piratas. The excursion lasts about 2 hours and offers plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the strikingly clear waters. 

Additionally, kayak and paddle board rentals are available if you want to explore the vivid lagoon at your own pace. 

On the mainland, you can walk through the Fort of San Felipe, read about the pirates who ravaged the town in the 17th and 18th centuries, and take a photo by the canons. The day at Bacalar would not be complete without a fantastic meal lagoon side at one of our favorite spots, La Playita. 

If you can fit it in, a river float on the gentle rapids at Los Rapidos (about a 20-minute drive from Bacalar) is an experience to remember. Situated on a simple plot of land in the country, the setting is a peaceful paradise. There is a minimal entrance fee of about $150 Mxn pesos ($7.50 USD), a restaurant, and inviting hammocks sitting just above the palm-lined, turquoise river. Since not many know about Los Rapidos, relaxing in the natural beauty of this tranquil gem is an idyllic way to spend an afternoon.

Alternatively, you may order one a salad, wrap, bowl, or panini from their delicious menu. For something lighter, there is a long list of smoothie and fresh juice combinations to choose from. But we highly recommend their signature cucumber and mint juice.

A Paleta Por Favor

 

Along with fresh blended juices (aguas frescas), paletas are a common treat in Mexico. Similar to popsicles, they are frozen ice bars on sticks. However, paletas are made with natural ingredients and juice from tropical fruits including mango, pineapple, tamarind, and lime. For something more rich and creamy, try the coconut or nut flavors. 

There are many paleterias scattered throughout the city, usually near the big grocery stores such as La Michoacana outside the Centro Maya shopping mall. But if you’re in the city center, try La Flor de Michoacan on 30th Avenue and Constituyentes.

It cannot be explained as a bar, or a restaurant, or an event center. Le Lotus Rouge is an experience. Natasha, the eccentric mastermind behind this art concept unites artists of every kind with the community in unique and thought-provoking ways. You are encouraged to leave judgments at the door and open your mind up to the unordinary. It’s as if walking into a dream, a circus, and a dazzling artistic space all in one. 

Through her many years as a Playense, Natasha has taught painting classes to all ages, created an unconventional museum of her own inspired sculptures and artwork, as well as showcased hundreds of talented musicians, comedians, and performers in Le Lotus Rouge.   

 

Taco Night

 

When in Mexico…No Playa del Carmen vacation is complete without a visit to an authentic taqueria. Locals will argue over which is the best of the best, but there are three taco joints that typically make it on every list.

El Fogon has three downtown locations. If you asked a taxi driver to take you to his favorite taco place, you’d probably end up at one of them. Secondly is Don Sirloin, also with multiple locations. Finally,  El Ñero on Benito Juarez in between 40th and 45th Avenue rounds out the list. 

If you’re testing traditional tacos for the first time, go with el pastor— these are always crowd winners! Marinated sliced pork is slowly flame-grilled on a rotating spit. The mouthwatering tacos are usually complemented with a slice of pineapple. Topped with cilantro, diced onions, and a zesty salsa, el pastor is a Mexican cuisine all-star.  

 

Take In A Show At Teatro de la Ciudad

 

This modern venue is on the west end (opposite the beach side) near Walmart on 115th Avenue. The theater is a performing arts hub, but also hosts speaker conferences, film festivals, and community events. 

You can see live Spanish versions of popular Broadway musicals, Christmas concerts, orchestras, and local favorite ballet performance of The Nutcracker. You Have Arrived!

Welcome to paradise! You’re one step closer to seaside palms swaying in the breeze and sipping cocktails with your toes in the sand. But first things first. 

Upon arrival, you’ll be required to fill out an immigration card. The lower portion will be stamped and returned to you. It is imperative that you keep this safe as it is your tourist card. You’ll need it to exit the country. However, should it be misplaced,  a copy can be requested at the immigration office at Cancun International Airport for a filing fee of about $40 USD. 

Money Matters

 

With regards to exchanging money, the most stress-free process is to order it before you come. In particular, if you have only Canadian dollars or Euros, your currency is a bit more complicated to exchange. You’ll want to have a few thousand pesos on hand for tips and day trips like cenotes. At the time of writing, $4000 MXN pesos is about $260 CDN. In order to keep with the hassle-free theme of the trip, request $50 and $20 peso bills for tipping and the remainder in $200s and $100s. This is a good amount to start with and you won’t have to worry about locating an ATM.

Most places do except USD, but the smaller family-owned businesses accept cash in the local currency. For a nice dinner out or to purchase a more pricey souvenir, credit cards are widely accepted. In any case, do not let the person handling your card take it out of your view. Fraud happens around the world, and Mexico is no exception.

Should your cash funds run low, you can always make a withdrawal at an ATM in town. Overall, refrain from using ATMs in hotels and all freestanding ones in the streets. Since these machines are usually compromised, it’s best to get money from an ATM within a bank.

We get it, you’ve arrived to the land where tequila and good times flow. But after a day of flying, in combination with the Riviera Maya heat, dehydration can set in faster than heartburn after a batch of flaming hot wings. So keep sipping bottled water while the bartender mixes another round. Your future self will thank you. 

Concerning taxi service, try to hail a cab outside of the main taxi stands (where there is a grouping of taxis.) At these official sites, prices are posted and fixed according to the area’s zones. Since these sites typically cater to tourists, they are more expensive. Instead, hop in a taxi one block over to negotiate a local price. As a rule, you and the driver should agree to a price before you get in. 

In the case of grocery shopping, there are a few supermarket chains in the downtown area of Playa del Carmen. Within these superstores, you can find everything under one roof from alcohol to a bath mat. Mega Soriana is located on Constituyentes and 30th Avenue, while just down the road is Walmart on 30th and Calle 10. When staying in Playacar on the city’s south end, the Soriana in the Centro Maya Mall is your closest option.

For specialty items, Dac on 30th Avenue and Calle 20 is a popular market. Here, you can purchase gluten free items, a broad variety of fresh herbs and produce, as well as imported cheeses. When choosing a bottle of tequila, you can sample options at various shops running along the 5th Avenue strip. On the other hand, La Europea in the Quinta Alegría mall on 5th Avenue and Constituyentes is a one-stop shop for premium liquors, wines, and high-end deli items.

All good things must come to an end. When it’s time to go, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport. A minimum of two to three hours is recommended. While you wait, you can visit the food court and peruse the many souvenir shops. Note that tequila and salsas should be bought before you head to the airport. You’ll want to tuck them into your checked bags, otherwise, they’ll be confiscated at security. Passengers are not allowed to bring more than 100ml (3.4 oz) containers of liquid in a carry-on bag.

Every scrumptious mouthful and every smile from his team make customers feel welcome and one hundred percent satisfied. On Fridays, gluten-free crusts are on the menu. The bustling downtown pizzeria is situated on 30th Avenue between Calle 24 and 26. Don Chendo is open everyday (except Tuesday)  from 2:00 to 9:30 p.m.

Perché No

Although it’s not in the city’s tourist hub, a visit to Perché No for its splendid Italian fare is worth the taxi fare. Whether you choose to dine indoors within the expansive and stylish dining room (ideal for larger groups) or sit on the patio, the dining experience will be one to remember. Using delectable ingredients such as melted Brie with organic arugula, Perché No knows how to produce a first-rate pizza.

Find this popular establishment along the south end of the main 307 Federal Playa del Carmen highway.  It sits between Sam’s Club and the Hospiten hospital.

 

Casa Sofia

Casa Sofia is an ideal option for guests staying in Playacar on the city’s south end. Located in Plaza Paseo Coba on Aviacion Road, the Italian restaurant presents plenty of seating in an air-conditioned tented dining room, as well as on their breezy patios. Salento 

Next, bringing the flavors of Puglia to Playa del Carmen, Salento offers a pleasing and jovial dining experience.
