Sure Playa del Carmen has seduced millions of travelers over the years with its sublime beaches and heavenly ocean views. But the fastest growing city in Latin America, has captured hearts with far more than the alabaster coastline and turquoise horizon. (Although these two attributes are definitely enticing factors!)
Due to its prime location in the Riviera Maya, this seaside paradise provides a central base for exploring beyond the beaches. From this tropical Garden of Eden, bursts spectacular flora and fauna, fascinating wildlife and a vibrant international community. This once isolated fishing village has now garnered the reputation for being a world-class vacation destination.
Coming up are 11 attractions that might just ignite a spark of curiosity to propel you off that beach chair! Of course, the idea of completely unwinding on a Caribbean beach sounds divine. But even a week is plenty of time to relax, plus discover some of the many regional highlights. For certain, it would be a shame to pass up the chance to see them!
1. A Fantastic Arts Scene
Vibrant Art
Many local and famed graffiti artists have painted the town red– and every other color of the rainbow! Stunning murals decorate the city and discovering these gems is a delightful tour in itself.
When you’re not happening upon incredible graffiti art, you can visit some of the local galleries such as the Art Gallery by Gaston Charo. Located in El Jardin de Marieta off of 5th Avenue between Calle 6 and 8, the gallery displays works from over 30 artists. Additionally, you can stroll 5th Avenue every Thursday night to view creations by local artists displayed along the famed cobblestone street. Thirdly, an option for the whole family, is the 3D Museum of Wonders on 10th Avenue between Calle 8 and 10.
Music ‘En Vivo’
From Jazz and Blues to Rock n Roll and Mariachi, Playa del Carmen boasts a terrific live music scene. Catch riveting live performances at popular spots like Le Lotus Rouge, Zenzi Beach Bar, Wine O’Clock and Lido Beach Bar.
The Teatro de la Ciudad is a state-of-the-art facility, which often showcases free performances in an effort to promote the arts. The intimate theatre is located on the west side of the highway on 115th Avenue near Wal-mart. The main stage plays host a variety of ballets, musicals, and seasonal events.
2. Eco Parks
Whether you ‘re an explorer with a mild sense of adventure or a thrill seeker, Playa del Carmen eco parks present loads of fun activities for every type of traveler. Within 45 minutes from the city are several options to choose from.
Xplor Park offers a bird’s eye view of the scenic jungle canopy. You’ll fly over the lush terrain on a series of 14 zip lines ranging from 8 to 45 meters above the ground. At one point, there’s an opportunity to zip behind a waterfall. Later, you’re paddling on a raft and riding amphibious vehicles through marvelous caves dripping with stalagmites and stalactites. This all-inclusive nature park is just 5 minutes south of Playa del Carmen.
Taking the adrenaline level down just a notch, while still exhibiting extraordinary natural beauty is Xcaret Park. This 200-acre sanctuary is home to an array of the region’s most fascinating flora and fauna. Throughout the ecological park, you’ll see Scarlet macaws, jaguars, tapirs, bats, butterflies, howler and spider monkeys, deer, and flamingos. Besides the jungle creatures, the aquarium is home to over 5000 marine species. This is the perfect opportunity to view sea turtles, tropical fish, coral, octopus, seahorses, jellyfish and starfish.
Within the park flows a picturesque underground river. Along your float, you’ll be awed by exquisite limestone formations and stunning wilderness. Finally, at the last stop of your magical day, the Xcaret Cultural Spectacle takes you on a journey back in time. The performers dazzle through song and dance revealing the compelling history behind this region’s most famous events.
3. Spellbinding Islands
Cozumel
For a taste of the island life, you need only board the 45-minute ferry from downtown Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. During your enchanting island escapade, renting a jeep is the way to go. Cruise the meandering road, stopping at the towering lighthouse or seaside eateries, which dot the picture-perfect sea wall.
Since Cozumel’s waters are known for their excellent clarity, you might participate in an unforgettable dive adventure. Or hire a local boat captain to sail you to El Cielo. Meaning “Heaven” in English, El Cielo is a striking bay only accessible by boat just off the southwestern side of the island. It’s in these unbelievably translucent waters that you’ll witness slumbering starfish and majestic stingrays gliding along the sandy sea floor.
Holbox
Just over an hour from Playa del Carmen, this is one of our favorite islands in the area. Without a doubt, Holbox is the quintessential island life. You’ll settle into the cool, laid-back charm the moment you arrive. Via a golf cart on the open dirt roads, you’ll come across delightful holes-in-the-wall. At these delicious Mexican diners, you can sample the island’s renowned lobster pizzas, as well as traditional and upscale national cuisine. Additionally, the street art is exceptional and adds even more cheerful color to the happy-go-lucky vibe.
Since Holbox is situated within the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, you can book a boat tour to see the fascinating creatures that call it home. The otherworldly encounter transports you to the open sea, where dolphins, sea turtles, flamingos, and whale sharks (seasonal) frolic about in their natural habitat.
4. Cenotes
Created thousands of years ago, these turquoise sinkholes are natural phenomena ideal for swimming and diving. As each limestone cenote is unique, you can visit some that are gorgeous, open pools, while others are completely enclosed. If you’d like to get the most bang for your buck, you can check out 5 remarkable cenotes all within one park at Kantun Chi.
Spend the day cliff jumping, enjoying a picnic lunch, or scuba diving the depths of these ancient aquifers. There are hundreds of these splendid gems throughout the Riviera Maya. Some of the most popular near Playa del Carmen include Cenote Azul, Cristalino, and Eden.
5. Mouth-Watering Menus
Due to a high concentration of expats in the community, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the vast choices of local and international cuisine. For example, you can dine on authentic Mexican dishes such as tacos or enchiladas at El Fogon, Axiote, or La Cueva del Chango. Hot picks for Italian include Luma Taverna del Mar or Trattoria del Centro. For a taste of Asia, grab a table at Po Thai or Sushi “n” Raw Bar. Delight your taste buds with French favorites at La Brocherie or the longstanding Chez Celine with its savory pastries. Craving sensational seafood? Head to Zitla or Los Aguachiles for a scrumptious casual meal. However, if upscale dining is what you’re in the mood for, Porfirios and Harry’s Prime Steakhouse are excellent choices. This is just the tip of the tantalizing iceberg when it comes to Playa del Carmen’s delectable gastronomy.
If you feel daunted by the enormous selection, perhaps a food tour is a good place to start. Eating with Carmen presents a delicious introduction to typical Mexican cuisine during a walking city tour. The palette-pleasing experience lasts around 3 hours and is recommended for all ages.
6. Magic Towns
Just 40 minutes south of Playa del Carmen, this Pueblo Magico beckons with its ancient Mayan city and outstanding festival scene. Hipsters and seasoned sun-seekers alike flock to the trendy vacation spot with its host of artsy installations, holistic retreats, and glamorous beach clubs.
Not exactly walkable as Playa is, Tulum is a great place to rent a bicycle and explore the neighborhood shops, cafes, and pubs. Surrounded by lagoons, cenotes, as well as the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, the area is a nature-lover’s playground. With a long list of stylish restaurants shrouded by jungle, Tulum is appealing to foodies who appreciate wholesome eats prepared by top chefs. Not to mention, after sipping on a few mezcals during dinner, you can always find a hotspot to dance until the sun comes up.
7. Mayan Encounters
Though the cause of the downfall of the once thriving Mayan civilization is unclear, remnants of the sacred cities still dot the Yucatan Peninsula. Likewise, lovely little Mayan villages continue to flourish in the area to this day. Companies like Alltournative work with these communities to help visitors understand the lifestyle, customs, and beliefs of the Mayan people. The tours give travelers a unique chance to speak with the first inhabitants of the region. Even more, you have the opportunity to participate in a traditional Mayan ceremony in the heart of the mystical jungle.
Ek Balam is another area where you can delve deeper into the history of the Maya. At the entrance of the ruins, you’ll notice some of the native trees have been labeled. Nearby, the local villagers peddle souvenirs in a small market with thatched-roof stands. They are happy to tell the interesting stories behind such trees as the Chechen and Chaca. As well, they can offer intriguing insights behind the story of Ek Balam, a city that is believed to have been constructed from 100 B.C. – 300 A.D.
8. Serene Lagoons
15 minutes south of Tulum, is Kaan Luum, one of the most calm and breathtaking emerald lagoons in the Riviera Maya. This hidden treasure is the perfect spot for a paddle board session with a local SUP company. Of course, lounging on your own inflatable floatie would be sublime as well.
There’s not much in the way of beaches or amenities, which makes it less crowded. This is an optimal day trip for relishing peace, quiet, and the great outdoors. Relax in the overwater hammocks or find a spot for your towel on either of the two piers to bask in the glorious Mexican sunshine.
Following the main road from the highway to the bay area in Akumal, you’ll eventually come to the Yal-ku Lagoon. Within the park, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the turquoise lagoon, teeming with a vibrant array of tropical fish.
All snorkeling equipment is available for rent, as are shaded palapas complete with shaded hammocks. Leave your food and drink at home as Yal-ku has its own restaurant on site. Alternatively, you can make a pit stop at La Buena Vida, ( just down the road) for an afternoon bite. It’s one of Akumal’s best ocean-front restaurants that happens to serve the most amazing piña coladas in the Riviera Maya.
9. A Dose Of The Mexican/Mayan Culture
By day, while visitors are soaking up the sun on the beach or making memories at local attractions, the locals are at work. However, after dark, residents fill the city squares and they buzz with activities. On the municipal grounds (Calle 8 and 25th Avenue) you can often find vendors selling marquesitas (crunchy crepes filled with Nutella and sprinkled with cheese.) Furthermore, the site is host to many free cultural dances and events. For instance, this is the main venue for Carnival each spring.
As well, the newly remodeled Parque Fundadores, home to the iconic Portal Maya statue, is often bustling with performances. Here, you can watch the Danza de los Voladores, or Dance of the Flying Men. The time-honored ritual was created to offer gratitude and to show love to the Earth and its natural forces. 5 men play songs on flutes and drums at ground level, then climb a seemingly sky-high pole. From above, they fasten a rope to their ankles and swing, upside down, as they descend slowly back towards the ground. It’s a marvelous ceremony to see, especially with the Caribbean backdrop!
10. Captivating Colonial Cities
Adding a stopover in Valladolid to your Ek Balam visit makes for an amazing combination day trip. Although the full day adventure will likely leave you worn out by the end, it will surely be a highlight of your vacation. Featuring several colonial structures built in the 1500’s, the small city has much to offer visitors.
Charming former mansions converted into magazine-worthy restaurants are a typical site in one of Mexico’s friendlies cities. Also several grand cathedrals present a glimpse of what life looked like in the 16th century. Not to be missed, Casa de los Venados, an 18000 square-foot restored mansion, showcases the largest personal collection of Mexican Folk Art.
What’s more, free walking tours are available. These easy-paced strolls present the best of the city. The Magic Town is adorned with fanciful eateries and a romantic main square. And, after a visit to the Convento de San Bernardino, you’ll walk away with a deep appreciation for Valladolid’s fascinating history.
11. Dazzling Dinner Shows and Dance Clubs
Rounding up the list is the incredible nightlife in Playa del Carmen. From the spectacular Mexican fiesta show at Coco Bongo to the Cirque du Soleil acrobatic show at Vidanta, there’s family-friendly and adult-geared entertainment alike.
As you roam 5th Avenue, in addition to the bounty of boutique stores and restaurants, you’ll discover every genre of live music. Whether a piano bar and a glass of wine are your thing, a jazz band, or rock and roll, there’s an upbeat atmosphere on every corner.
Plus, there’s nothing like salty margaritas and salsa night at Zenzi. Well maybe mojitos and mambos at La Bodeguita del Medio. Without a doubt, you’ll be a fan of not only the city’s sizzling nightlife, but also the endless activities beyond the beach.
When you are visiting a new city, it’s helpful to do your due diligence and gather useful information so that when you arrive at your destination, everything runs a little smoother. With travel tips, you can minimize the unknowns and be more prepared when you find yourself in unfamiliar territory.

5. Best Tour
Gold: Xel Ha Park
The Xcaret Experiencias Group has six (plus the soon-to-open, Xavage) remarkable ecoparks under their belt. But if we had to pick our favorite, it would be Xel Ha. Although you would undoubtedly have an unforgettable day or evening at any of their parks, travellers of all ages have a blast exploring the phenomenal nature at Xel Ha.
Among some of the thrilling features within the expansive park are modest zip lines, The Cliff of Courage (for confronting your fear of heights), Children’s World with slides leading into the turquoise waters, snorkelling bays, cenotes and the Lighthouse. This newer addition towers over the park and presents a magnificent 360-degree view.

Your boat captain makes stops at two vibrant reefs, bursting with a rainbow of colourful coral and fish on route to El Cielo. This stunningly beautiful bay area is only accessible by boat, which means on most days, your group will be able to enjoy the strikingly clear waters to yourselves, with the exception of maybe one or two other boats.

9. Best Pub For Cheap Beer
Gold: Cervecería Chapultapec
(Multiple Locations)
This popular pub seems to be popping up on a new corner every month in Playa del Carmen. People love the concept of offering each menu item – from cocktails and beer to tacos and burgers – at one price! What first peeked our curiosity about La Cervecería Chapultapec were the crowds that filled the space on a nightly basis. With so much competition, it is not an easy feat for a Playa restaurant and bar to pack the house on any given night.
But, what really blew us away when we finally had the opportunity to visit La Cervecería was the value you get for your money. After receiving the bill, we had to check twice to see if the server had forgotten to charge for something. We could not believe that three of us could eat and drink for under $400 pesos!
There are two central locations (10th Avenue and Calle 14 or 1st Avenue and Calle 22) to choose from. The lively pub atmosphere is the ideal place for a casual night out in Playa del Carmen.
Silver: Tiny Tiki Hut (20th Ave between Calle 6 & 4)
Bronze: La Verbena (Calle 34 between 5th & 10th Ave)
10. Best Tacos
Gold: El Fogon
(Multiple Locations)
Of all things Mexican, there is nothing more authentic than the taco as far as food goes. That’s why a visit to a taquería is a must and El Fogon sits at the top of our list for best tacos in Playa del Carmen.
Whether you’re taking the family for tacos al pastor (a vertical spit-roasted marinated pork) after a day at the beach, or need some late-night grub after a few beers at the club, tacos are a good idea any time of day!
Currently, this well-liked eatery has three downtown locations. There is one on Constituyentes between 25th and 30th Avenue. Another sits on 30th Avenue at Calle 32 and the third is on 30th Avenue and Calle 8 kitty-corner to the Wal-Mart.
Silver: El Gran Taco (Across from Centro Maya Mall on Calle 41 Sur)
Bronze: Los Hijos Del Mar (30th Ave between Calle 24 & 26)

Allow Bric’s friendly staff to stock your fridge so that you have everything you need upon your arrival (including a six-pack of chilled beer or wine!)
A Taste Of Playa
After you have settled in, you’ll be ready for a bite to eat. Il Baretto (Calle 26 & 5the Avenue) is a great option for casual eats and cold cocktails. Their famous brick-oven pizzas are as close to authentic Italian as you can get and their pasta selection is divine.
For an upbeat authentic Playa food scene, we recommend Zitla on Calle 12 between 15 and 20th Avenue. Quench your thirst with an ice-cold cerveza accompanied by a wide selection of seafood dishes like their citrusy ceviche. Choose from the winning menu of tacos and fajitas to pub-style options including burgers, wings and guacamole. You’ll love the excellent food, super service staff, and happy-go-lucky vibe.
If you’d prefer a more elegant dining experience, Catch on the rooftop of Thompson Playa del Carmen offers tables with exceptional views of the turquoise see by day and the best cityscape view at night. The delectable fare is fresh and inventive, all within a perfectly posh ambience.
Day 2: Hit the beach!
You can hear the waves calling your name and can’t wait to feel the soft sand in between your toes. The majority of Bric’s rentals are within a 5-minute walk to the beach or right along the alabaster shoreline.
At The Elements, for example, guests have access to an exclusive beach club with a volleyball court, shaded loungers and a snack and beverage bar. Other superb properties that boast spectacular views of the Caribbean include El Faro, Aldea Thai and Magia Playa. Not only do you have the sea nearby, but also sophisticated pool areas to relax by as the warm Mexican sun kisses your skin.
One can never have too much beach time. So for dinner, your table in the sand awaits at Fuego Restaurante and Cantina on Calle 38 (turn left when you reach the sea!) The waves, the candlelight and the stars overhead create the ultimate romantic atmosphere. This is one of the few fine dining establishments in Playa del Carmen to find certified Wagyu organic beef on the menu. Plus, taste a succulent selection of seafood dishes including grilled octopus and Caribbean lobster.
Day 3: See the sensational sites of the Riviera Maya!
For this full day of fun, you will visit 3 amazing places. You’ll get dynamic insight into Mexico’s ancient history, its rare natural beauty and it’s world-renowned cuisine.
Part 1
For this day trip, you have a couple of options for transportation. A rental car with Orbitz costs approximately $45USD for the day with collision insurance. Alternatively, Travel Yucatan offers affordable private tour and transportation options throughout the region. If you’re traveling together with another couple or with a group of friends, this is the way to go. You can split the cost, while enjoying the freedom that comes with customizing your own itinerary. A cooler stocked with drinks is typically included with the service. Sandwiches and snorkel equipment may be added upon request for an extra fee.
From Playa del Carmen, you’ll drive south for 40 minutes towards Tulum. The highways are in excellent condition and there is good signage for the upcoming stops on your road trip. Just 5 minutes from Tulum is Grand Cenote, a scenic limestone sinkhole fed by the world’s longest underground river system.
For a $10USD ($180 peso) entrance fee, you can spend a couple of hours taking in the breath-taking surroundings. Snorkel and swim in the alluring translucent waters and witness bats and turtles who call the cavern home.
There are hammocks scattered throughout the lush park as well as bathrooms and change rooms. Snorkel equipment and lockers are available to rent, but bring your own towel. Please use only eco-friendly sunblock to help sustain the animal life and vegetation that live within this Riviera Maya gem.
Part 2
After your refreshing stop at the cenote, you’ll continue on to the recently excavated archaeological site of Coba. The entrance fee to this centuries old Mayan ruins site is well worth the reasonable $75 pesos ($4USD). Once inside, you can hire a guide ($500-$600 pesos), which is recommended. Hearing the fascinating stories of this mysterious culture and the history behind each structure brings the sacred grounds to life.
On occasion, a spider monkey family will crossover above, swinging from one towering tree to another. Likewise, you’ll get up close and personal with an iguana or two. The heart-of-the-jungle setting is very serene, especially in the fall months when there are fewer visitors.
Bicycles, a.k.a. ‘Mayan Limousines’ (tricycle taxis for 2), are available to rent for $50-$100 pesos. While the rentals are not necessary, you should know that the path leading to Nohoch Mul, is about a half hour walk. This massive 137-meter Mayan pyramid is one of the few ancient temples in the Yucatan Peninsula that visitors can still climb. The view overlooks the seemingly endless green landscape and town of Coba. Standing at the top, you can feel the peace of the jungle and this mystic city.
Part 3
The final leg of your incredible day trip takes you to Gitano, one of Tulum’s chic jungle haven restaurants. Chandeliers hanging from the trees and a friendly, creative dishes and a professional wait staff come together to present an exceptionally unique dining experience.
This is your chance to test the samplings from top chefs and sip smoky mezcal cocktails prepared by innovative mixologists. You may want to ask your Bric ambassador to make a reservation ahead of time. Be forewarned that the drinks are pricey. However the atmosphere, music and cool setting make Gitano a must on the itinerary.
Day 4: Shopping on Playa del Carmen’s famous 5th Avenue
After your ambitious, yet exhilarating outing on Day 3, you and your party will be ready to put your feet up. Relaxing by the pool or lounging beachside with margaritas under the shade of a thatched palapa paint enticing pictures.
In the afternoon, when the sun begins to set and the midday heat fades, a trip to the city’s most famed cobblestone street is in order. Along 5th Avenue, you’ll discover hundreds of boutique and souvenir shops like Jula Luma to purchase a keepsake from your Mexican vacation. Or you can find a one-of-a-kind cover-up or dress from La Troupe to add to your beachwear collection. Beyond the window-shopping, there are plenty of quaint bars along the way where you can hydrate and people watch.
A local favorite to check out for dinner just off the main tourist hub is Luma Taverna del Mar on Calle 38. The service is impeccable as is their fresh menu of seafood and other outstanding entrees. The sautéed mussels are exquisite, while the steak and risotto are also prepared to perfection.
Day 5: All-inclusive hotel day plus Rauxa dinner show
25 minutes south of Playa del Carmen in the Catalonia Royal Tulum Hotel, Rauxa wows audiences week after week. Touted the best dinner show experience in the Riviera Maya, this audacious burlesque-cabaret show features acrobatics, theatrical elements, song and dance performances. The seductive show is a feast for the eyes and a flawless enhancement to the impressive 4-course dinner.
Choose to purchase dinner show tickets only, or you can buy a day pass for only $10US more. This all-inclusive pass gives you access to the hotel’s beach, restaurants, bars and pools for the day, as well as the 8pm show.
How To Get There
There are a couple of ways to get to Catalonia Royal Tulum from Playa del Carmen. You can catch a colectivo from the pick up point at Calle 2 between 15th & 20th Avenue in the morning. Listen for the assistant on the sidewalk calling out “Tulum” and board this shared taxi van. The cost is $40 pesos per person. Tell the driver that you are going to Catalonia Royal Hotel “por favor” so he is aware of your stop.
A second option is a taxi. For 1-4 passengers, a ride to this hotel costs roughly $300 – $350 pesos each way. Again, if you are with a group, splitting the fare gives you an economical means of travel throughout the Riviera Maya.
When the doors of the Rauxa show open at 7:00pm, you’ll receive a welcome drink and be escorted to your table. It’s an intimate venue so each table presents a complete an unobstructed view of the main stage. For the ensuing 2 and a half hours, there is never a dull moment. The music, the sultry spectacle, and the masterpiece menu will leave you in awe. If you’re not yet ready to call it quits by 10pm, guests of the show are invited to stay for an after party, which runs until midnight.
Day 6: Playa del Carmen Food Tour
Whether a first-time visitor to Playa del Carmen or a Playa fan looking for a unique activity, this food tour offers a full-range encounter with local flavors.
The highly recommended team of personable locals at Eating With Carmen deliver several curated tours to choose from. From vegan to gourmet to traditional Mexican cuisine, each tour takes you on a tasty expedition to the best the city offers in that category. Learn what to look for and how to order at a street food stand. Sample amazing regional food such as cochinita pibil and tamales. Compliment your dishes with a top-notch tequila or fresh fruit-infused waters. Conclude with a visit to a traditional heladería (ice cream shop.) This is a wonderful opportunity to step off the beaten path and experience the true essence of Playa del Carmen and its people. Not to mention, you can pick up a quality bottle of tequila to bring home with you.
The tours last 2.5 to 3 hours and the meet-up point is at a convenient downtown location. There is a morning or afternoon start time to choose from. But we suspect you’ll love the savory journey so much, you’ll be inclined to sign-up for another session.
Day 7: Enjoy the vista and the vibe at Deck 5 Pool & Skybar
For a change in scenery, soak up some sun at Deck 5’s dapper rooftop pool. Besides Christmas, summer is the most highly anticipated season of the year! Longer days mean you have more time to spend outdoors barbecuing, having drinks on the patio, and relishing the warm summer air.
As the days heat up, we are inclined to head towards water. Kids crowd around sprinklers at spray parks and boats are launched into lakes in assembly line fashion.
Fortunately, if you have booked your summer vacation in Playa del Carmen, there is plenty of outdoor fun to be had. Being on the water is an integral part of the lifestyle in this seaside community. If you want to stay cool, just go…well in any direction in the Riviera Maya. You’re bound to discover an alluring body of water compelling you to dive in. The following is a list of top ten things to do near Playa del Carmen for summertime fun.
1. Swim with Whale Sharks
I know what you’re thinking— sharks? Really? But hear me out. This is not an extreme sport just for loco daredevils with nine lives. People of all ages have surreal encounters with these mellow sea giants every year. In fact, my three kiddos (aged 10, 8 and 7 at the time) still vote it as one of their most memorable day trips since living in Mexico.
During the summer months, the whale sharks take a pause on their migration route. Chilling here for 3 and a half months, they spend their time near the islands of Isla Mujeres and Holbox. Luckily, the intimidatingly massive fish prefer the taste of plankton over humans. They come to the area where their food source is plentiful. For the most part, they don’t seem to mind that people tag along for a surreal underwater experience.
Note: This excursion can easily be done in one full day from Playa del Carmen. Tours are offered from the end of May to the beginning of September.
2. Rio Secreto
This TripAdvisor Hall of Famer receives rave reviews for being a one-of-a-kind experience in the Riviera Maya. Only 10 minutes south of Playa del Carmen, the nature reserve and eco-park boasts a series of caves and natural limestone pools. These turquoise marvels are fed by the largest underground river system on the planet.
As a bona fide explorer (with helmet headlamp and all), you will navigate through waist-deep water and dimly lit pathways leading to cenotes. These crystalline pools were once considered sacred by the ancient Maya. Sacrificial artifacts dating back 10000 years are still being discovered to this day.
One of the many things we love about Rio Secreto is the company’s dedication to the environment. All of the guides are passionate and educated in the science behind this natural phenomenon. That is to say, they are committed to keeping you safe, fascinated and entertained.
Best of all, the tour groups are small giving you the sense that you have the whole park to yourself. All you need to bring is your swimsuit; life jackets, wetsuits, towels, and lunch are provided. This unforgettable trip beneath the surface of the earth really does seem out of this world.
Note: Recommended for ages 4 and up.
3. Yoga Paddle Board With Aloha
Can you imagine a better opportunity to connect to nature than paddling towards the sun at dawn? Picture it – you’re on the paddle board, gliding into the fiery orange horizon. This sunrise peace is so far from usually hectic morning routines. Forget prepping for work, scarfing down a bowl of oatmeal, and rushing out the door to sit in traffic on your commute.
Instead, savor the tranquility as you witness a pelican nearby target a school of fish. Just as he nose dives into the water, you look up to see the sun emerge from behind a puff of white clouds.
For certain, there are few things that nourish the soul more than a splendid sunrise paddle. Playa del Carmen based company Aloha Paddle Club has been around for over a decade. Aloha offers Stand Up Paddle Boarding and Surfing, along with SUP Yoga classes at sea and as well as at local cenotes. Their business headquarters is located on the powdery soft sand at Fusion Beach on Calle 6. (Talk about a hard day at the office!)
Sander, the founder of Aloha and his team, lead daily one-hour tours just off the shores of Playa del Carmen. On superior weather days, a two-hour paddle session to a nearby reef is available. On the weekends, with a group of 4 or more, Aloha offers a Tulum SUP Yoga tour which lasts about 6 hours with a stopover for authentic Mexican tacos in Puerto Aventuras.
Note: There is no minimum age requirement as younger children can sit on the board with an adult.
4. Xplor Park
This nature park, located under 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen, offers a full-day itinerary of various activities. You’ll soar like an eagle above the dense jungle on death-defying (ok, not really, but still intense) zip lines. At the steering wheel of your amphibious vehicle, you’ll cruise over forest trails and through stunning caverns. Furthermore, you’ll paddle past centuries-old stalactites and stalagmites on a raft along the vivid, blue-green subterranean river.
There are dozens of picture-worthy points throughout the vast park where you can practice your photography skills. You’ll come across waterfalls, extraordinary rock formations, and their exhilarating new slide attraction, the Toboganxote. Alternatively, there are hammocks if you need a short break from the non-stop adventure.
A minimum age of 5 years is required and children must be at least 3 and a half feet tall to be permitted on the zip lines. The all-inclusive park provides a buffet and non-alcoholic beverages.
Tip: Purchase your tickets online 21 days in advance to receive a 15% discount.
5. Rent A Boat And Spend The Day In ‘Heaven’
Just off the coast of Cozumel is a little piece of Mexican Caribbean heaven appropriately named ‘El Cielo’. This paradise is only accessible by boat and the clarity of the aqua blue water is shocking. It is so clear that you can see stingrays 50 meters away gliding along the seafloor.
While dipping in the breathtaking bay, the odds are good that you’ll have an up-close-and-personal encounter with these graceful creatures. Along with the non-threatening stingrays, there are starfish, grouper, angelfish and sea turtles in the area. Not only is The pristine water is as translucent as a backyard pool. Similarly, the depth is quite shallow. Only 3 to 4 feet deep, it’s perfect for all ages and is ideal for snorkeling.
The tours typically last 4 hours and usually include snorkeling equipment, lunch, alcoholic beverages, pop and water. As well, the includes two stops, one to explore the vibrant Mesoamerican Reef and the second is El Cielo. We recommend Sergio’s team from Aquatic Sports and Expeditions or cozumel-tours.net. This place is what Caribbean dreams are made of and well worth the trip over to the island!
6. Cenote and Frozen Margaritas in Akumal
With the heat in Playa del Carmen at its maximum strength from June to September, you’ll need a solid list of cool down methods. As it happens, freshwater cenotes, fed by a chilly subterranean river system, abound in the region. In fact, there is an easily accessible mini cenote route 20 minutes south of the city along the 307 highway. Choose from 3 unique cenotes – Jardin del Eden, Cristalino or Azul.
In contrast to some resort pools which can feel like a warm bath come mid-August, cenote waters remain cool throughout the summer. The depth in these cenotes can range from 12 to 120 meters and are perfect for divers to explore the mystical underwater caves. However, if you’re not the Jacques Cousteau type, there are other exciting activities for every age. For example, you’ll have a blast snorkeling or jumping from the modest limestone ledges into the pristine ponds below. There are bathrooms, life jackets, snorkel rentals and picnic areas. Between the cost of a Colectivo (shared van taxi) and the entrance fee, you can expect to pay $1to $200 to $250Mxn per person or $12 – $15.00Usd.
Just five minutes south of the cenote strip is the quaint fishing village of Akumal. Meaning ‘The Place of the Turtles’ in Maya, Akumal is a superb spot for swimming with sea turtles. The barrier reef system, which sits a few hundred yards from the shore, protects the bay, calming the picture-perfect Caribbean waters.
There is a main dive shop where you can rent snorkel equipment or book fishing and diving tours. Along the white-sand coastline, a few restaurants present front-row seating to the captivating view.
After a day of cliff jumping, snorkeling and swimming with the turtles, stingrays, and tropical fish in Akumal Bay, you’ll be ready to sit back and relax. Find casual bites and cold beverages at one of the beachside restaurants. Take a moment to watch the fishing boats bob on the bay. Witness the beauty of the setting sun’s rays piercing through the palms as you sip on your refreshing cocktail. If you haven’t fallen in love with the Riviera Maya yet, Akumal will definitely capture a piece of your heart.
7. See Dolphins and Flamingos on Holbox Island
Step aside Tulum, Isla Holbox (pronounced hole-bosh) is the latest Quintana Roo gem to be hailed by savvy travelers as Mexico’s best-kept secret. Visitors love the laid-back charm and tranquility of this rustic wonderland. Cars are a rare sighting. Instead, golf carts outfitted with heavy duty all-terrain tires taxi people to and fro. However, the majority of boutique-style hotels, restaurants and main boat dock are walking distance to the ferry terminal.
Just an hour from Playa del Carmen plus a 20-minute ferry ride to the island, Holbox offers an escape from the stressors of everyday life. The island is surrounded by the Yum Balam Reserve. Boat tours are available throughout the year, but summer is our favorite time to visit.
In the offseason, tour companies take you on a 3-hour journey, which includes a stopover at Isla Pasion (a gathering spot for dozens of migratory and local birds) as well as a visit to a cenote. It seems as though you’ve stepped into your own version of the Blue Lagoon movie. But instead of foraging for your own food, a friendly local family serves fresh coconuts and snacks at their little shop.
From the end of May to the beginning of September, the island’s most revered guests, the whale sharks, are in town. On this tour, you’ll spend the day sailing along the waters of the reserve. On the way to the whale sharks, you’ll spot turtles, dolphins and sailfins, also known as flying fish. One of the highlights is an hour visit at a deserted island paradise. Here, you can wade through waist-deep crystal clear water that’ll make your jaw drop. Meanwhile, the captain prepares the most divine ceviche (cured fish) dish on this side of the peninsula. Finally, at the end of the day, you’ll reach the final point of interest. From a safe distance, you’ll coast near a sandbar, covered with hundreds of bright pink flamingos. In all honesty, it is almost as magnificent a sight as the whalesharks.
Surprisingly, for a small community, there is a substantial amount of eateries on the sleepy island. From lobster pizza to fresh catches of the day to upscale international cuisine, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Since it’s such a short distance from Playa del Carmen, we recommend a day or an overnight trip to this enchanting, little nature refuge. Holbox provides an excellent opportunity to disconnect and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.
8. Find Bliss at a Beach Club
Arguably the best summertime activity, a beach day is a hit whether you’re in the mood for fun or relaxation. Even the little ones love the sand (although eating it is not recommended.) If lounging on a silky soft beach is your happy place, then you will find utopia in the Riviera Maya.
From Maroma Beach to the north, Lido Beach Club in Playa del Carmen and La Zebra Tulum to the south, there is a bounty of stunning beaches. Speaking of dreamy beaches, Xpu Ha (20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen) was once chosen for one of Corona’s famous beer ads.
An entrance fee of $75 Mxn per person gives you a bracelet and access to the Xpu Ha. Before you know it, you’ll have your toes in the sand and a margarita in your hand. With your bracelet, you can use that cost towards your food and beverage consumption at La Playa Restaurant Xpu Ha. Create your own Caribbean-inspired commercial with that turquoise seascape backdrop that daydreams are made of.
For sure, there is no shortage of breathtaking beaches to choose from near Playa del Carmen. Bring your snorkel gear and explore the reefs just off the shore in Puerto Morelos. Strike up a game of volleyball on Maroma’s abundant coastline. Strut your beach style at Mamitas in the heart of Playa del Carmen, where Djs spin all day and fashionistas gather. Find a daybed and chill along with a bottle of your favorite bubbly on the renowned beaches of Tulum. If beach bliss is what you’re after, you can’t go wrong when you vacation in Mexico’s Riviera Maya.
9. Cruise the Caribbean on a Catamaran
Soak up the sun, splash in the sea, and experience the quintessential Mexican Caribbean vibe on board a catamaran for the day. Set sail to secret locations throughout the Riviera Maya for snorkeling, fishing, and swimming alongside turtles and stingrays. In addition to pit stops at remarkable gems, you and your crew will love the lively atmosphere while sailing the seas. While on deck, you will be treated to music, regional snacks such as ceviche and guacamole, as well as cool cocktails.
Reputable companies like Riviera Elite offer private yacht and catamaran tours from Puerto Aventuras, just 15 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. Indeed, their 3 to 8 hour expeditions are magical as their services have garnered them TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice Awards and #1 ratings in the Riviera Maya. Their chartered tours include snorkeling the MesoAmerican Reef or viewing the ancient city of Tulum from the crystal clear waters below. Without a doubt, this rousing day on the water will be an adventure to remember!
10. Hydrate and Stay Cool at La Flor de Michoacan
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, try to hydrate with more than cervezas and tequila. In central Playa del Carmen (Constituyentes and 30th Avenue across from Mega Soriana superstore) is the authentic Mexican fresh juice and ice cream shop, La Flor de Michoacan. These ice creameries are as popular with Mexicans as Starbucks is with Americans. In most cities you can find one on nearly every corner.
What makes these delicious Mexican popsicles so special is that they are made with fresh exotic fruits like Mamey, Soursop and Dragonfruit. We suggest the frozen Paleta (on the stick) de Coco (coconut), Nuez (creamy walnut) or Cajeta (rich caramel-flavored goat-milk.)
Not only does La Flor de Michoacan sell fantastic ice creams but their aguas frescas (fruits and vegetables blended with water) are a perfect way to stay hydrated. Try the limon con pepino (cucumber and lime), the Sandia (watermelon) or the horchata (sweetened milky rice water with cinnamon) which is a dessert in itself!
Here are just a few of the many ways to cool off when the sun strikes in Playa del Carmen.
