Caleta Tankah, Riviera Maya

Just before the ancient Mayan city of Tulum, sits yet another Riviera Maya treasure offering a magnificent three-for-one experience. Caleta Tankah features a breathtaking rustic beach as well as an open-air cenote engulfed by lush jungle foliage. But the sublime natural beauty does not end there. Due to centuries of erosion, the waves have carved out one of the most spectacular coves found in the Mexican Caribbean.

Not only is Tankah’s cenote fed by the Yucatan Peninsula’s underground river system, but also the cove is a mix of fresh and saltwater. This phenomenon is not widely known, especially if you’re a visitor to the Riviera Maya. However, with this guide, you’ll discover how easy it is to plan a day trip to this natural wonder next time you’re in Playa del Carmen.

What Is Caleta Tankah

Caleta Tankah Cove, Riviera Maya

Situated amidst a stretch of powdery soft coastline  bordered by shimmering, turquoise waters, is Caleta Tankah. The remarkable inlet is protected on two sides by porous, limestone embankments. A narrow opening in the rock wall allows the sea to lap in creating a crystal clear, all-natural pool.

In addition to the picturesque cove, the beach club offers lounge chairs, day beds, as well as food and beverage service. Although the menu includes flank or ribeye steak dishes, we suggest sticking to basic Riviera Maya dishes such as ceviche and fish tacos. Plus you can’t go wrong with their margaritas and piña coladas.

Cenote at Caleta Tankah, Riviera Maya

Next to the main entrance and beach club, meander along the sandy path to find a refreshing cenote. Its remote jungle setting and translucent waters are as enticing as ice cream on a scorching day. Indeed, Caleta Tankah is special destination. After all, it’s not common to find a scenic cenote, a captivating cove, and beautiful beach all in one place.

How To Get To Caleta Tankah

Caleta Tankah Beach Club, Riviera Maya, Mexico

Without a doubt, renting a vehicle is the most convenient way to visit Riviera Maya gems like Caleta Tankah. Since parking on this property is free, a rental car is optimal. Furthermore, with your own vehicle, you are free to add more fun stops to your excursion, such as Tulum (under 15 minutes from Tankah.) However, you can hire a taxi or private van service if you have a large group. As a guest of Bric Vacation Rentals, your designated ambassador is available from the moment you book to assist in trip planning and transportation arrangements.

Alternatively, you can catch a colectivo, which runs along the main highway (307 Federal) from Puerto Morelos to Tulum. For under $5USD one way, you hop on these shared van taxis at Calle 2 around 20th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. Look for the signage on the van stating Playa del Carmen · Tulum and be sure to tell the driver your stop is Caleta Tankah. Carry small change in pesos to pay for the fare each way, approximately $45 MXN.

When coming from Playa del Carmen, there is a large sign on the left side of the highway. Watch for the Tankah sign about 5-10 minutes past Akumal. If you are taking a colectivo, you will have to cross the highway and walk to the entrance, which is about 5 minutes from the drop off point. On the other hand, if you have your own vehicle, you will drive just past the sign then take the next u-turn to head back north to the entrance. In any case, Caleta Tankah is an easy 30 to 40-minute day trip from Playa del Carmen.

Facilities At Caleta Tankah

Caleta Tankah Beach Club, Cove, and Cenote, Riviera Maya, Mexico

Upon arrival, a fee of $300 MXN for adults and $150 for children aged 6-12 is required. This fee gives you access to the bathrooms, showers, cenote, and beach loungers.

Goggles and life jackets are available to rent if you’d like to snorkel around the bay. Because the Mesoamerican Reef System is nearby, there is a good chance you will spot some interesting marine life. Also available for rent are beach towels if needed. As mentioned above, restaurant service is offered. Therefore, no outside food or beverages are permitted.

The beach club’s hours of operation run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Occasionally, the property is closed for private events, so it may be best to call before you go.

Optional Activities:

Frankly, it’s a challenge to see all the park has to offer in just one day. Navigating the vast park can be overwhelming. However, the signage is helpful as is the multitude of friendly staff at every turn.

While it is one of the most expensive parks on the list, it is guaranteed that you will get your money’s worth. The nightly show itself is a priceless and eye-catching experience. The 2-hour extravaganza involves over 300 impassioned artists depicting the history and legacy of Mexico through theatrical, musical, and folkloric dance performances.

Xcaret Nightly Show, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

It’s important to note that on this full day of fun and adventure, you will need to hydrate and fuel up in order to enjoy the boundless activities. A buffet meal, plus one beverage, is only included in the Xcaret Plus admission. This is something to consider as outside food and drink is not permitted within the park. There are several restaurants and beverage stations to choose from at an additional cost if you opt for the basic admission. Also included in the Plus admission is snorkel equipment.

If possible, purchase your tickets online in advance to receive a 10 to 15% discount. This park can be enjoyed rain or shine, so if you can save a few dollars, book 7 to 21 days before your visit. Children 5 to 11 receive a 25% discount and kids 4 and under are free. Regardless of the type of traveler you are or the ages in your group, you will discover an abundance of engaging activities.

Note:

Bring a set of dry clothes to keep in the lockers provided to change into for the nightly show.

Xel Ha

(45 minutes south of Playa del Carmen)

Xel Ha Park, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya, Mexico

With a slightly smaller menu of attractions than Xcaret Park, Xel-ha still manages to pack in a wonderful array of thrilling activities to fill an entire day. While the magnitude of the park is not as overwhelming, you’ll definitely be astounded by Xel-ha’s natural splendor.

Activities:

Optional Activities:

Beyond providing an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Riviera Maya, the myriad of water activities help to beat the heat. Moreover, there are plenty of hammocks surrounded by coconut palms that provide shady respite.

Best of all, the park is all-inclusive, which means you can enjoy unlimited food, beverages, and snorkeling all day long.

Jungala Aqua Experience

(25 minutes north of Playa del Carmen)

Jungala Aqua Experience at Vidanta, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya

This waterpark provides an entertaining day trip for both kids and parents. If the kiddos feel the need for speed, they’ll have hair-raising adventures on slides like the Beachside Boomerango, Paradise Free Fall and Hoop Hoop Aqualoop. For the less daring, jumping the 1.5 meter waves in the wave pool and kicking back in the lazy river (the longest in Latin America) are ideal. For the littlest of the bunch, the Kids’ Rain Fortress water and sprinkler structure provides loads of fun.

As the kids have their fun, you can relax in one of the many plush lounge beds or shaded hammocks. Alternatively, you can reserve your own private cabana with various packages available. Each selection includes fresh fruit, cool facial towels, as well as an attendant on standby to clean your sunglasses. What’s more, the upgraded luxury experience includes champagne and a curated cabana menu to choose from.

Yal Ku Lagoon

(30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen)

Yal Ku Lagoon, Riviera Maya

This pristine lagoon provides a stunning locale for beginner snorkelers. The cost is about $30 USD and includes life vests, snorkel gear, access to the washroom facilities, and parking.

In order to optimize your visit, plan to spend about 3 to 4 hours exploring the inlet and coral reef. If possible, try to go on your own, rather than with a tour so that you have ample time to inspect the many areas of the lagoon. You can expect to see coral formations, vibrant schools of fish, and perhaps a sea turtle or ray if you’re lucky.

Tip:

There are 2 entrances: 1 enters the larger point of the lagoon, has a restaurant, and requires the use of a life vest. The other has washrooms and lockers as well, but is smaller, cheaper, and does not require a life vest. Bring your own snorkel gear to avoid the rental costs.

Although you can dine onsite, there are several seaside restaurants within walking distance. A top choice back down the same road towards Akumal Bay is La Buena Vida. This is a special spot with an upbeat beach club vibe, great food, and even better cocktails. Take in the turquoise views, while relaxing on one of their cushy bean bag chairs or from the towering platform, which overlooks the bay.

Rio Secreto

(10 minutes south of Playa del Carmen)

Rio Secreto, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

This mystical, natural reserve boasts a series of centuries-old caves flooded by the longest subterranean river system in the world. Rio Secreto focuses on sustainable tourism and the staff are very conscientious about preserving its ecological integrity. In fact, only a fraction of the cave system is open to the public for tours, while the rest remains protected.

In 2020, Rio Secreto was the subject of a National Geographic study. Researchers inspected and scanned the cave formations for clues related to the weather in an effort to determine what may have caused the abandonment of the Mayan cities in the area. Although their findings were not conclusive, the group of scientists did make fascinating discoveries. For example, an altar was found at the entrance of the underground river system, along with human bones that were most likely the remains from human sacrifices.

As you wade through the same turquoise waters as the National Geographic crew, your guides will explain the history behind the formation of the ancient cave system. They are also enthusiastic to point out the regional species including bats, catfish, and other wildlife that inhabit the park.

Upon arrival, you are provided with water shoes, a short wet suit, and head lamp. There are lockers to store your belongings and you are not allowed to take your own pictures. A professional photographer accompanies the group and photo packages are available for purchase at the end of the tour. After the breathtaking 3-hour encounter, a lunch is served, which includes handmade tortillas.

Selva Maya Eco Adventure Park

(40 minutes south of Playa del Carmen)

Ziplining

At Selva Maya Eco Adventure Park in Tulum, immerse yourself in a thrilling half-day journey through the heart of the Mayan jungle. Begin by soaring across nine exhilarating ziplines and navigating five hanging bridges that offer panoramic views of the lush canopy. Challenge yourself with rock climbing on a pyramid structure, followed by an adrenaline-pumping rappel descent overlooking a cenote. Dive into the crystal-clear waters of ancient cenotes for a guided snorkeling experience, exploring the mesmerizing underground river systems unique to the Riviera Maya. For those seeking more excitement, embark on an ATV adventure through rugged jungle trails, embracing the wild terrain.

After your majestic jungle encounter, savor authentic Mayan tacos, a perfect way to conclude your day of exploration and cultural immersion. The tours run for 4 hours and when you book, you can choose a morning adventure from 9am to 1pm or the afternoon from 1pm to 5pm.

Mayan Water Complex

(20 minutes north of Playa del Carmen)

New to the thrilling sport of wakeboarding? The reputable instructors at Mayan Water Complex are skilled at easing you and your board onto the lake in a safe and fun manner.

Your cable wakeboarding experience lasts 4 hours and includes instruction from the dock as well as all of the equipment. With the pass, you have access to the showers, lockers, as well as the lounge and entertainment area with table games.

For those who are more advanced, there are 2 other lakes, which feature daring obstacles at a moderately higher speed. Besides the wakeboard pass, visitors can soar high on a flyboard for a 30-minute stimulating and memorable experience. This excursion is recommended for children 5 years and older.

Xenses

(10 minutes south of Playa del Carmen)

Xenses Park, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Set amidst a stunning jungle backdrop, Xenses allows you to play Alice in a Mexican Wonderland. There are an engaging variety of interactive experiences that offer rare photo ops. For example, your mind will play tricks on you when you see rivers flowing uphill in the Mexican town. Likewise, you’ll question the law of physics inside rooms with furniture secured to the ceiling and light fixtures on the floor.

The feast for the senses continues as you cautiously walk through the pitch black Xensatorium. You’ll climb mountains, walk through the rain forest and visit other ecosystems along the way— in complete darkness, wearing nothing but your swimsuit. It’s one of the many fun surprises you’ll encounter as you make your way through the disorienting park.

Sliding along the sludgy, mud river gives a nostalgic feeling of childhood and the joy of splashing in mud puddles. The river float highlights some of the captivating stalactites and stalagmites that decorate the underground caves. Finally, you can relish the lush jungle views from a bird’s perspective on the Bird Flight portion of the park.

Xenses is ideal for every age, especially if you have curious younger children who prefer to explore at their own pace. Similar to the other parks by Xcaret, obtain a discount by booking online in advance.

Chikin Ha

(20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen)

Chikin Ha Park, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

This lesser known nature park showcases the Mayan culture and their reverence for nature through small and informative guided tours. First, you’ll be led via bicycle through the forest to an underground cave. Spotlights showcase the magnificent, prehistoric formations and crystal clear cenote waters. You’ll discover glowing organisms living within the crevices and have ample opportunities for surreal photos.

From there, you can rappel below the earth to find even more extraordinary caverns, all the while learning about the history of the Yucatan Peninsula. Next, you’ll head over to a Mayan ceremony where you can partake in a peaceful gratitude ritual conducted by a shaman.

Chikin Ha Park, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

If you want to face your fear of heights, the zipline portion at Chikin Ha is a gentle nudge in that direction. The modest circuit takes you over turquoise cenotes as well as the vast jungle canopy. Finally, spend the remainder of your time swimming in the fresh waters of the limestone pools. There are 3 cenotes, all unique and each breathtaking in its own right.

The entire guided tour lasts about 3 hours. However, you are welcome to stay and swim or redo the zipline circuits as many times as you please. There is a restaurant and lockers on the property. Since this is a smaller park, the price is very reasonable, but still offers hours of incredible enjoyment.

Tip:

Bring your own towels and extra pesos for food and beverages.

Xplor

(10 minutes south of Playa del Carmen)

Xplor Park, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

As for modest zip line circuits, Xplor does not fall in that category. Across the sweeping green blanket of jungle are 2 heart-pumping circuits extending over 1200 feet in total.  Not to mention, the highest descends from a 45 meter platform and is not for the faint of heart. Therefore, Xplor park is not recommended for children under 5 years old, or those that have a paralyzing fear of heights.

One of the highlights of the park is the hammock splash, where visitors glide down on a hammock swing into a refreshing cenote. It is in this exceptionally exquisite corner of the park that you have the chance to sneak behind a waterfall for yet another memorable moment.

Plus, you’ll be impressed by the vividly blue waters as you paddle your raft through the underground river and cave system. Equally as spectacular as the Underground Expedition is the amphibious vehicle ride, on which you can admire more of the local flora and fauna.

Conveniently, the park is all-inclusive. In order to replenish your energy, you can dine on authentic Mexican fare at the lunch buffet or sip on a signature smoothie. After spending a day here, you’ll understand why Xplor is one of the most visited theme parks in the world.

National Reef Park – A Snorkelling and Diving Paradise

Snorkeling in Puerto Morelos, Riviera Maya, Mexico

Although being a frequent visitor to the Mayan Riviera region, it wasn’t until we moved to the area that I became aware of one of its most significant features. Despite the ample amount of time spent on the beach and at sea, I hadn’t realized we’d been snorkeling the second largest barrier reef on the planet.

In fact, Puerto Morelos is the closest point in the Riviera Maya to the Mesoamerican Reef. As a result, in just 5 minutes by boat, you’ll discover phenomenal snorkeling and diving. There are several accredited operators within the National Reef Park offering guided tours to the best spots for viewing the abundant Caribbean marine life.

You can swim with sea turtles and seek out the indigenous queen conch, grouper, or stingray gliding along the seafloor. Depending on how many reef sites you visit, the tours can run from 2.5 hours to a half day. With over 50 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish, you’re going to want to have as much time as possible to explore this fascinating underwater world.

A midday lunch break by the sea is a must and each table offers a million dollar view. Combined with the flavors of delectable seafood dishes, the salty sea breeze and spanning turquoise vista are a feast for the senses.

Plus, they offer a nice selection of local craft beer  as well as premium liquors and signature cocktails.

Puerto Morelos, town center, Riviera Maya, Mexico

Not far is the low-key  town center with its picturesque church, ice cream shops, and artisan handicraft market. In spite of the rapid growth happening throughout the Mexican Caribbean, this beach town has managed to maintain its fishing village character. Thus, there are no busy tourist traps, only modest mom and pop shops and restaurants, lending to Puerto Morelos’s endearing allure.

Relish Scenic Cenote Swims on the Ruta de los Cenotes

Ruta de los Cenotes, Puerto Morelos, Riviera Maya, Mexico

By some estimates, there are nearly 10,000 limestone sinkholes, known as cenotes, scattered across the Yucatan Peninsula. Despite their abundance, each formation is unique and breathtaking in its own right. Some of the turquoise pools are completely exposed, others are semi-open, while a few are entirely enclosed.

On La Ruta de los Cenotes, there are at least 60 cenotes stretching over a 20-mile span within the lush Riviera Maya jungle. The marked roadway is just before the town of Puerto Morelos, on the west side of the 307 federal highway at the Jardin Botanico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin.

One popular stop is Zapote park, with its three stunning cenotes, zip lines, and ATV jungle trails. Las Mojarras is the largest open cenote along the route. Its width is over 65 meters with 2 platforms for jumping into the cool, clear waters. There are bathrooms, life vests, and picnic tables at this location. Of all the spectacular wilderness wells to choose from, Boca del Puma is one of the highlights. Beyond the two crystalline cenotes is a zip line circuit, rugged ATV paths, and a Museo del Chicle (Chewing Gum Museum). As well, there is a palapa restaurant where it’s not uncommon for a curious spider monkey to pay a visit.

No matter if you choose an immersive jungle experience or an excursion at sea, a day in Puerto Morelos is sure to be a memorable one.

Snorkel With Turtles

Playa del Carmen Day Trip to Akumal Bay, Place of the Turtles, Riviera Maya

As far as Playa del Carmen day trips go, Akumal is just close enough and just breathtaking enough to limit protests and maximize smiles of approval. Only 25 minutes south of Playa del Carmen sits the beautiful bay of Akumal, a.k.a. The Place of the Turtles.

This encounter with the turtles lasts about 1 hour with no need to board a boat. You’ll embark with your guide and snorkel set from the beach towards the coral reef, only a couple of hundred yards from the shore. Although spotting a turtle is not guaranteed, the odds are generally high. Plus, you’re likely to meet stingrays zooming along the seafloor and other exotic fish that call the reef home.

After an enchanting swim with the turtles, you can grab a table with a view at the beachside restaurant or continue further down the entrance road to La Buena Vida. Xel Ha Park

Xel Ha Park Playa del Carmen Lazy River Float

Despite being a farther distance from Playa del Carmen (45 minutes) than its sister company Xcaret, we love the activities Xel Ha offers for older kids. From the inner tube river float through mangroves to the scenic lighthouse and its 40m spiraling waterslides, Xel Ha is always a hit for the whole family. As well, the kids will love the jungle bike ride, snorkeling in the scenic inlet, and making a splash at the Cliff of Courage.

Even though there are a host of activities to keep everyone happy and busy for the entire day, Xel Ha does present a list of optional things to do for an extra cost. For example, your crew might want to dive deeper into a wondrous submarine experience on a Sea Trek or adventure. Then again, your teen trekker might prefer to stay above the water on the Adrenalina speed boat excursion or bicycle zip line expedition.

With your all-inclusive pass comes a buffet continental breakfast, snacks, domestic open bar and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages. For added convenience, access to lockers, showers, towels, snorkel equipment, and lifejackets are all included. The only thing you’ll need to pack is your spirit for adventure!

Chikin Ha Park

Chikin Ha Cenote Park Playa del Carmen

This Mayan cenote park features 3 extraordinary limestone pools, however that’s just part of the family fun. The sublime jungle encounter begins with a bike ride to a subterranean cave. Beneath the ground, you’ll discover ancient stalagmites and stalactites as well as intriguing glowing organisms that dwell within the limestone crevices.

Next, you’ll follow a guide to a pita-shaped cave where you can participate in the traditional gratitude ceremony led by a shaman. Having the chance to observe this sacred ritual gives a glimpse into the time-honored Mayan tradition of giving thanks to the earth for all it provides.

Later on the park tour comes the opportunity to soar above the cenotes and sail high above the treetops via zip lines. Though not as intimidating as those at Xplor, this modest circuit does provide splendid views with a slightly smaller dose of adrenaline.

Finally it’s time to cool off in a crystal clear cenote after a full morning of biking, zipping, and exploring. From this point, your guide bids farewell and you are free to spend the rest of your day swimming or revisiting some of your favorite tour stops.

Chikin Ha grants guests access to a tropical haven that truly showcases the stunning, natural beauty of the Riviera Maya. You’ll find it just before Cenote Azul on the 307 Federal Highway, approximately 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen.

Cozumel Day Trip

Cozumel Day Trip From Playa del Carmen

One of the perks of staying in Playa del Carmen is gaining accessibility to a bounty of must-see Riviera Maya attractions. Due to its optimal placement along the magnificent Mexican Caribbean shores, you don’t have to travel far to terrific beach clubs, adventure parks, or enchanting islands.

One island in particular worth adding to your itinerary is Cozumel. With so many things to do and see, you’re going to want to make an early start. Fortunately, the ferry terminal is in Playa del Carmen’s downtown core, on the south end, just off the popular 5th Avenue. The ferry ride across the awe-inspiring turquoise sea takes only 45-minutes. Before you know it, you’re cruising along a palm-fringed road in an open-top jeep, basking in the sun and glorious island vibes.

For teens, the snorkeling is phenomenal, especially at beach clubs such as Playa Palancar and Mr. Sanchos. Another option for entertaining water activities is Paradise Beach with its inflatable water structures and kayaks.

Since Cozumel is known for its flourishing reefs, clear waters, and exceptional visibility, the Atlantis Submarine expedition is a fan favorite. Over the 2-hour journey, you’ll travel 100 feet below the surface for unique opportunities to observe a sunken ship as well as a vibrant array of marine life. Be sure to check online for pricing, as sometimes there are promotions for advance bookings.

Before hopping back on the ferry, a quick trip to town center makes for a perfect ending to the day. Just up the road, heading in the same direction as the dock, you can peruse the local souvenir and ice cream shops. In the square, grab an authentic treat from one of the vendors and be sure to take advantage of the colorful Cozumel sign for a memento of your island escape.

Mural Bike Ride

A guide to swimming with whale sharks on Holbox Island, Mexico

Updated Mar 18, 2024

Waking Up In Paradise

I awoke early and tiptoed out to catch a glimpse of the sunrise in all its pink and orange grandeur. Looking out to the sea, I sighed deeply feeling grateful for the front row seat to the spectacular event. After living in nearby Playa del Carmen for four years, I wondered why I had waited so long to visit this picturesque island. Although I had only been in Holbox for a few short hours, I was already completely captivated.

A Wild Adventure At Sea

August on Holbox Island means whale shark season, hence the reason for our trip. It was almost time for the highly anticipated tour. We looked forward to boarding the boat that would take us to swim with the majestic, spotted sharks. By late morning, we had gathered the group together to walk to the nearby dock. There, we were greeted by a stalky, Mexican man with blue eyes and a gold tooth. Capitan Cholenco invited us onto his boat and introduced us to his assistant, Misael.

We settled in, strapped our life jackets on, and listened to Misael run through the safety instructions and precautions. As we listened, the captain’s assistant made no mention of any dangers of swimming alongside these sea giants. Despite growing to an average size of 7 meters long, whale sharks are serene and gentle fish. In order to sustain their energy levels, they need to consume about thirty to forty pounds of plankton daily. Therefore, Misael advised that we refrain from using sunscreen, a water pollutant that ultimately kills their food source.

Along the hour and a half journey towards the whale shark area, Captain Cholenco spotted a sea turtle. His knack for noticing a change in the appearance on the water’s surface a hundred yards out was astounding. He slowed down and circled back so that we could view the mid-sized turtle. It bobbed at the surface then vanished into the underwater abyss. While spotting the sea turtle in its natural habitat was thrilling, we would soon discover far more waiting in store for us!

Wildlife on Holbox Island, Mexico

This bird caught a ride with us for the last 1/2 hour of our trip.

Soon after, we arrived at the feeding area of the school bus-sized fish. Within minutes we were geared with flippers, masks and snorkels, ready to join the grey and white whale sharks. Two by two, we jumped nervously into the water. With our heads submerged, we swam alongside these marvelous giants. We witnessed feeder fish tagging along on the beast’s belly, eager for leftovers that spilled out of the sides of its enormous, gaping mouth. After sharing a few rounds of priceless underwater encounters with the whale sharks, we were called back to the boat. Without a doubt, it was a bucket list moment. We were all reluctant to climb aboard, hoping the magic of the breathtaking experience would last a little longer.

Of course trying to keep up to the whale sharks required a lot of energy and we were ravenous. The Captain had a surprise up his sleeve that would satisfy our hunger. Pulling up to a small fishing boat containing three good-natured fishermen, Cholenco purchased a few red snapper. The fish-market in the middle of the sea was a very surreal experience in itself. Still, there were many more enchanting scenarios ahead. Fifteen minutes later, we came upon a rustic beach. As we floated towards the white sand, the vast views of transparent, aqua-blue water rendered us speechless.

Across the crystal clear water, various bird species were perched on a sandbar. Catfish darted up to the boat to great us as we leapt into the refreshing, shallow water.  At this awe-inspiring inlet, we enjoyed three hours of bliss without another boat in sight. The kids snorkeled and tried to catch fish with their bare hands. We sat in the glistening water, sipping ice-cold beverages while Misael and the captain prepared a batch of fresh ceviche. Indeed, Cholenco’s secret, patented sauce made it the best ceviche we have ever tasted.

More Surprises To Come!

As the sun headed west and began its descent, we realized that our grand adventure would soon end. But, just when we thought we had seen it all, we came upon a pod of five dolphins. Giddy and wide-eyed, we observed the graceful creatures explode through the surface in perfect synchronization. We seemed to share an equal curiosity because they circled the boat twice before swimming off in haste.

Dolphins in the wild

It had been a scorching, hot day. Cholenco patiently obliged our periodic requests for pit stops and a chance to cool off in the turquoise waters. At the final leg of our journey, just a few minutes from the marina, we saw hundreds of poised pink flamingos. The tour operators explained that the rosy-colored birds obtain their bright pigment from eating mainly shrimp. The captain killed the engine so as not to startle the flamingos. He fascinated us with more facts. For example, due to the fragility of their long, thin legs, the birds need a proper take off to fly. Without a gradual ascension their legs can break, usually resulting in death not long after.

Pink Flamingos

The flamingos come to the island usually from April to October

Coasting into the dock, we thanked Misael and the captain for a thrilling day at sea. Settling into our beach hammocks at our hotel, we recalled the many highlights of our memorable trip. Later, after cleaning ourselves up, we ventured onto the main street of the small town. Vibrant murals covered entire buildings, golf carts motored across the gravel roads, and seafood aromas filled the air.

El Chapulim enticed us with its promise of fresh catch of the day offerings. There was no menu, however the chef recommended four choices of main entree. One selection included a filet of succulent white fish with a poblano sauce. As well, we savored a prawn dish sautéed with zucchini, mushrooms and chiles in a garlic butter sauce. To drink, we ordered the house mango and rum cocktails. The delectable meal was an ideal end to our final evening on the heavenly island of Holbox.

It is recommended that you bring towels and something to counter nausea such as non-drowsy Gravol or Dramamine.

Bring cash. On the dock, you may be to pay a small entrance fee ($50 MXN) to the Yum-Balam Biosphere Reserve. This was a separate cost not included in the whale shark tour.

Pack hats, biodegradable sunscreen sunglasses and long-sleeved swim shirts for the children. Our boat offered some shade.

Do pack non-toxic repellent with you to lather on at dusk when the mosquitos come out.

Where to stay and eat

We stayed at the Amaite Hotel and Spa, which was approximately a 20 minute walk from the ferry dock. Conveniently, there are golf cart taxis that will take you to your destination. The Amaite Hotel and Spa is ideally situated in the town center, offering sea views and spacious family rooms which accommodate up to 6 people. A continental breakfast was included with our stay, but a restaurant and bar provides a full dining menu and beverage service. On-site massages can be booked with advanced notice and yoga classes are given twice weekly. In addition, this ocean-front hotel is less than 100 meters away from the tour boat dock.

For excellent fish tacos, a reasonably priced cocktail menu and exceptional live music, we suggest Viva Zapata.
